Free agents this summer

Who actually knows who Gillingham are signing, We still dont know if Tomlin will be here next year or not. Ricky Holmes definetly isnt going to Gillingham after speaking to his Mum. She said his agent has had alot of phone calls regarding his next club. She thinks he is gonna choose Northampton whether they go up or not!!

Did he not tidy his room again? If so I don't want him here, we've already got rid of one rebel :winking:

I had heard Ricky Holmes had agreed a deal with Gillingham in principle, but that his foot injury towards the end of the season caused Gillingham to pull out. Barnet had an offer on the table, but their relegation has probably put paid to that.

But, as Beefy says, he's really not as good as his reputation would suggest and I'd certainly rather have Hurst than Holmes.

Oh I dunno, it's certainly close.

Hurst was excellant first half of the season. At one time he was top of the assist list for all four divisions adn also waded in with quite a few goals, some of which were stunning. His form dropped away towards the end of the season but then so did most of the team. Also first half of the season he played wide right and his partnership with Clohessy was one of our main sources of attack, latter part of the season when he did play it was in a three in midfield and im not sure that really suits him. I think all in all he had a pretty good first season for us.

Hurst is what I call a divided player. By that I mean he's viewed so differently by most fans. I was talking the other day to a friend at work about him and he says his nickname for Hurst is 1 in 10. When I asked him what he meant, he said when you look at how many assists he has, you think he must have a great delivery on him, but he really hasn't. He tops the assist chart with 16 I believe, but also tops the most crosses chart with 140 odd. That IMO is a poor return of assists for that many crosses. I also can't stand the fact that he doesn't take his full back on. I've only seen Holmes twice I think, and he's my type of winger, in the fact that he likes to take on players. Would deffo be worth a trial at least IMO.

Edit: I would like to also add that when he does put a good ball in the box, it is 100% perfect to be fair to him.

Good stats, but surely a better stat would be his cross accuracy percentage. Someone could put in 150 crosses in a season straight on the head of the striker, but if they can't finish then it looks bad on him. I would disagree and say that 16 goals from 140 crosses is a good return.

I agree that at times his crossing wasnt great, but he did something right to be top of the assist chart. Also as a wide player you need your forwards to committ to the ball, early season we were getting on the end of crosses, second half we werent and if we did, we werent scoring. As for taking the full back on, he will never do that, he hasnt the pace, but neither did/does Beckham for example. As a wide player you dont always need to be blessed with pace , but have the ability to cross the ball into the right areas and Hurst does do that. If he was a better player he wouldnt be at Southend, some of the failings of players at this level is exactly why they are at this level. The cream will always rise to the top. For what its worth i would like Holmes at the club, some of his family are shrimpers so he has links to us, i think he might even be a shrimper himself. I would be happy with Homles and Hurst in the side.

To be fair you both make good i.e. Hurst. He's just a player that personally frustrates me. But on his day he was great with his crossing I will admit.

Hurst's quality. Had a dip in form 2nd half of the season but give him a decent midfield again and he'll shine. Easily top end League 2 player.

your all looking to deep.
you look at any winger,
and the stats would all be the same,
if you don't put it in their you anit going to gain anything

if you don't shoot you aren't gonna score etc

Winger Andy Barcham is a player I'd like to see at the club. Ex Gillingham, he's been released by Scunthorpe.

Ginga ninja Nicky Bailey been released by middlesborough. Hasn't it 'always been his dream' to return?

I'd rather have Gutts back. His contract's up as well.

As if you'd prefer Gutts to Bailey! I know Bailey was a tosser when he left, but he was immense on the pitch. Gutts was alright but no way near as influential in attack or defence.

Oh I know, Bailey's easily twice the player Gutts is/was, but Guttridge would actually be a pretty astute signing for us. Similar to Timlin in the sense that he's capable of grabbing the game by the horns and influencing it, and he'd come fairly cheaply too. Aside from the virus he had at Cambridge at the start of his career, he's never had many injury concerns and has played 44 games for Northampton this year... sounds exactly like what we're after.

I agree in terms of realism, and I'd welcome Gutts back. However if both were available then I'd go for Bailey any day.
