If my memory serves me well (great first line for a song?) This match was played in the snow, with possibly the South Bank closed? Goalscorers were Billy the Best & Eddie Clayton. Attendance was just 2,887.November 1969 v Aldershot, 2-2 draw but I can't remember the goals or scorers.
I remember that game, the Aldershot keeper exchanged snowballs with the North Bank!.If my memory serves me well (great first line for a song?) This match was played in the snow, with possibly the South Bank closed? Goalscorers were Billy the Best & Eddie Clayton. Attendance was just 2,887.
Yes, the only time I was ever in the West Stand because the South Bank was closed. I think this was also the first full game John McKinven played since his leg break. Hardly ideal conditions for him.If my memory serves me well (great first line for a song?) This match was played in the snow, with possibly the South Bank closed? I might be wrong but am sure guy Whittingham ( ex army ) got 2 and Colin Clark the other for Portsmouth17 March 1992 a 2-3 home defeat by Portsmouth, not sure who scored first, I'm old and there are no records of scorers I can find online apart from Tilly and Keith Jones scored for us, but what order the goals were scored in I can't tell you
Danny o'sheaEither Roy McDonough or Barry Silkman vs Hereford at Roots Hall Friday 18th April 1986. 3-1 win and I have no idea who scored the first, but Super Roy got 2 and dodgy Barry got the other one.
No,a year too soon—see my entry no. 62 above.Thank you zeus, were you in attendance like me?
The above match against Aldershot was actually John McKinven's final league match for the club. John's comeback match was on the 4th. October '69 at the Racecourse ground when we were well beaten by 4-0. Sadly John left Roots Hall at the end of that season and joined Cambridge United who had just been elected to the old league division 4 in place of Bradford Park Avenue. Cambridge United's first match in the football league was at home against Lincoln City (1-1) also playing that day for Cambridge United were former Southend United team-mates Mel Slack and the late great Trevor Roberts. On the coaching staff back then was former Shrimper Peter Watson the brother of Dave Watson who went on to play for England 65 times scoring 4 goals.Yes, the only time I was ever in the West Stand because the South Bank was closed. Thanks for that, I had forgotten about the Wrexham game. The Cambridge info ws interesting too. Did he return to Southend playing for Pegasus at Grainger Road for a short time? The above match against Aldershot was actually John McKinven's final league match for the club. Yes he did, he signed in September 1971 after leaving Cambridge United. Not 100% sure but seem to remember that Ernie Shepherd was involved at this time and was certainly at Roots Hall in some capacity when John signed from Raith Rovers back in around 1960.Thanks for that, I had forgotten about the Wrexham game.
