Breaking News Facilities Update - North Bank (NWQ) X block now open

It does seem a little strange to me that we 'only' have a few hundred fans wanting to sing and chant out of 7k or so.

I went to an Arsenal game recently and the 2 ends were chanting to each other, and there were so many songs that the whole ground joined in on.

That is the only top flight game ive ever been to, but it did impress me. It did make me wonder why it isn't similar with a crowd closer together and to the pitch

This is from my old & unreliable memory but here goes .........

............. "in the old days" there used to be a lot of good hearted shouting & some simple songs. The level of "abuse" could probably be described as mild. Some shouts would get a round of laughter.

Fast forward and it had changed into unpleasant abusive comments directed at opposition, the chants started to have swearing in them & the "louder mouths" were connected to unpleasant individuals who you would like to move away from ......... and of course you could because the ground was mainly standing. I don't remember seeing anyone drunk at games.

And in those days you had away fans at one end of the ground & home fans at the other - singing would ebb & flow between the ends depending on how the game was going.

It's actually in my top 3 things i want to experience, a game at roots hall where all home fans are so pumped that they are all singing and chanting for the majority of the game, together. I would LOVE to hear and feel what that's like!
Not sure about the new ground but Spurs fans at WHL used to sing a song where each stand sung their own bit. Was nothing clever, just 'we're the west side white hart lane' then south side, east side & north side in order. Sounded great as each stand did their bit. Not sure there'd be enough fans prepared to sing in each stand to make it work at RH though!

Used to happen abit 20, 30 years ago between west, south and sometimes east

Pre all seater the best atmospheres were definitely the Liverpool game, the Spurs game and the Birmingham Fry return game. That last one possibly tops the lot.

Post all seater, bearing in mind I’ve been an exile the game that sent us to Cardiff for the first time was intense, others have been mentioned.

It’s a fiver. Some grounds sell much better quality food, sadly we have a way to go. Hoping COSU can make changes soon.
Food at all sports stadiums in the UK is a total rip off. They’re complaining in trials for the new national stadium out here that a bottle of small water is about 15p more expensive than in shops!

Having said that last time I bought a take away in the UK I also had a coronary.

I believe there is a clear correlation between good atmospheres and the amount of fans standing up instead of seated.

(Btw I’m not here to kickstart the standing / seating debate as I know some physically can’t stand for 90 minutes).

I understand it’s a very nichè point as we all know you can make just as much noise sitting as you can standing but I’ve always felt there’s more participation to atmospheres in general when more fans are standing, I don’t know whether they feel more comfortable to join in to those around them or feel they can express themselves more when standing and moving about but hopefully where the north bank is bigger than W/V and TBV’s capacity increases - so will the noise.

Especially where someone else mentioned on this thread, out of 7k around roots hall we probably only have a standing area of one block (about 400 - 500) instead of an entire end dedicated to atmosphere (about 1,500).

‘We’re the park lane of white hart lane’ was one section. I used to go up there with an old school mate and we paid £11 to stand in the park lane end. Amazing now when you think of it.

The whole North bank thing has been done to death.

Several times we have got back in there and it hasn't been good at all. The view is terrible the leg room awful. It hasn't been what it once was ie the 80s and 90s.

I'd completely be all in for a newly built and safe standing North bank with bar area underneath but not as it is.
The problem with rebuilding is if it's a different - non barreled, high 'open' roof then you're not going to get the noise.

I'd like to see it just safe standing as is, with some better toilets and a bar somewhere.

And agree I'm not sure it will be succesful as a allocated seated area - as you say been done before and didn't work

Being brought up in Romford I would go to Tottenham during the early 80,s and stand up in the Shelf, £1.10 to get in as an under 16, could be a scary place up there at times.

But managed to get a ticket back up in the Shelf again when we played them n the FA cup on the Saturday,
Then we went and got that bloody penalty.
Now that did leave me with a dilemma sitting up there as a SUFC supporter.

It’s the fact the noise carries from there, whereas W block doesn’t sound quite as loud from the South Upper for example where I sat for a good few years. Also the psychological edge of having the fans behind the goal. Agree the seating isn’t the best but it’d certainly generate more noise if TBV moved there. Personally I like a side-on view in my older years.

It's great that it has a new bar and catering etc but who is realistically going to be able to use it.

75% of matchday gates are season card holders. Maybe a couple of hundred will choose to sit in that corner but can't see many more.
Anyone who has used the current West stand facilites will welcome the possibility of something, ANYTHING better with open arms

We went back in there a number of times 10-15 years ago and would agree that the atmosphere wasn’t any different/better.

But with the South Lower often being the only place with seats available for the better selling games. Having an extra 1,400 tickets available in a better area can only be a good thing.

Having said that, given the lack of tickets elsewhere. A lot of the North Bank tickets could end up being picked up by non-regulars, who are probably going to want to sit down, and are less inclined to want to help create an atmosphere. Could cause some issues as the club probably aren’t allowed to advertise it as a standing area.

Enough said from Kev. Let's grab the opportunity to create a proper atmosphere at RH. If you like a good old sing song, get yourself in the NB when available.

On a big crowd, Maher says: "Charlton will bring a big following as I know we've opened up more of the ground. But if we can get our fans in there eventually and back in the North Bank that would be brilliant and my biggest wish. Saturday will be a great atmosphere and one our fans will relish."
