Essex Cricket 2024

So Sams now out of the T20 with Bosch taking his place. Cook still injured and Cox needing emergency Surrey leaving us to bat with 10 in the biggest game of the season.

Injury gods not looking down on us this season!

why on earth are Middlesex playing at Chelmsford tonight?!?

Apparently Lord’s is unavailable - but their relationship with the MCC is a bit rocky and they’ve been threatening to move elsewhere so I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Their official answer is here

Robin Das has signed a 2 year deal to stay with Essex

Froze Khushi and Charlie Allison have also signed deals for 2024 season.

Dean Elgar is rumoured as Alastair Cook’s replacement.

Current squad
Tom Westley 2025
Feroze Khushi 2024
Robin Das 2025
Charlie Allison 2024
Jordan Cox 2026
Matt Critchley 2024 2027
Paul Walter 2025
Luc Benkenstein 2024
Simon Harmer 2026
Michael Pepper 2025
Adam Rossington 2025
Noah Thain 2024
Ben Allison 2024
Jamal Richards?
Shane Snater 2025
Sam Cook 2025
Jamie Porter 2024 2027
Aaron Beard 2024

Out of contract but not released
Nick Browne

Released
Josh Rymell
Eshan Kalley
Aron Nijjar
Will Buttleman

I’d therefore expect us to line up something like this in the Championship
1. Elgar
2. Browne
3. Westley
4. Cox
5. Critchley
6. Walter
7. Rossington
8. Harmer
9. Snater
10. Cook
11. Porter

With Browne and Snater’s places up for grabs pre-season. Not sure if there’s budget for one more signing if Cook is replaced by an overseas player.
Excellent news as Luc Benkenstein has signed a deal until the end of the 2027 season.

He was one I was worried about losing with Harmer and Critchley potentially blocking his opportunities as a spinner.

Hopefully Charlie and Ben Allison and Noah Thain are locked up long term as well.

The other one I worry about is Feroze Khushi. Wouldn’t be surprised if he sees his future away from Essex. Don’t think he’s been given the opportunities he should have.

What's happened to Khushi? He started the FC season opening, then got injured and hasn't been seen since...

Tom Westley missed a game for the birth of his child which gave Nick Browne a chance. Both Browne and Khushi made hundreds (albeit Browne made a bigger 100) with Westley returning there was only one spot available and Browne took it. Officially Khushi missed the game with an injury but he’d been named in the squad which makes you wonder….

He later came back for one game but didn’t score much (neither did Browne) on one of the trickier pitches and was dropped again for the umpteenth time in his career.

Next seen out on loan at K*nt although he must be back as he single handedly saved Essex from a humiliating defeat against Suffolk yesterday in which he scored 181 of Essex’s 347ao (Suffolk made 319-4 in reply).

He seems to be someone who, like his bat, his face doesn’t fit. Nick Browne has barely made a run since that Durham game yet has kept his place based on that century in that match.
