God!!!.....you know, when you get to my age, the days just seem to fly by ...................anyone for a draw then? Probably best just to humour me.
Should really stop making crap statements .......whereas it was impossible to chase the target that was set, it's certainly not impossible that we could crash to an ignominious defeat.................52-4 at tea. :'( Hang on sloopy (Essex), sloopy (Essex) hang on!!!

84/5, how many overs left?

Probably not enough for us to win, but that doesn't seem to be stopping Wheater trying!

4 4 . 4 so far this over. It might just be because the field is up and he gets full value for his shots (which he does from what I've seen of him), but I do hope he's playing sensibly rather than slogging mindlessly - last time I saw him he got caught on the boundary when we were batting out for a draw!

Whats the chances of Tim Southee staying on for the rest of the summer, I thought he nearly came here before choosing the IPL £ . Now that hes coming for the T20 he could well be convinced to stay for the rest of the summer, unless NZ are playing somewhere?

No one commenting today but believe it or not Essex have made a good start against Gloucestershire, following a rain affected morning. For once, Essex won the toss and put the hosts in.............latest Glos 160-8! (Masters four wickets)

Seems strange having a CC game starting on a Saturday! I remember the old regimented days of Thursday - Saturday 3 days games followed by a One Day game on the Sunday!

Back in the 60's Essex were the pioneers of Sunday cricket, they'd start a 3 day championship match on the Saturday to finish on the Monday, Tuesday would be the rest day and then they'd start another 3 day game on the Wednesday.

The 40 over John Player League started in 1969, prior to that there were lots of benefit matches with an International Cavaliers XI.

Ravi follows up his 1 and 8 verses Middlesex with a 4 ball duck at Bristol

And there was me thinking Englands loss would be to Essexs gain

With so much time lost to rain there's unlikely to be a result anyway, would be nice to get some batting points on the board though and give them something to think about in terms of their second innings tomorrow. 121/3, 134 behind. Good to see RtD back in the line up, but assume Napes is injured? Can't see that he'd be dropped after great performances with bat and ball in the last two matches.

Napes is rested.

If it stays dry, there's still a decent chance of a result if we play well (or indeed badly).

MtS goes but we're going along at a fair tick at the moment, 173/4. Guess it's a case of getting runs on the board and seeing what we can do with the ball, Gloucs can't be too aggressive with their declaration if we get close to their total so hopefully we're in a position now where the worst case scenario is a draw, though I imagine SL thought that yesterday.....

RtD gone but an excellent 57 run partnership at almost a run a ball has pulled us almost level. 247/6.

321-9.........that's a 66 lead. Any additional runs are gold dust but even that small advantage could be important in the context of this game. I shouldn't imagine that they will envy batting for the last hour or so.
....................321 all out, now let's tear into 'em!

37-2 at the close, with both openers back in the pavillion. We need a really good first hour this morning and then be clinical in finishing them off otherwise it looks like another match petering out to a draw. Pity really because without the time lost due to the weather I'm sure we would have had a result.
