Cricket World Cup (50 Overs)

yyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After steadfastly refusing to get up at 4am for the start and instead setting my alarm for 7 (i ignored it) i finally crawled out of bed around 10:30 and the first sight i saw was AB de Villiers trudging off to make it 124/4 so its safe to say i saw the best part of the match from an England perspective and i'm now looking forwards to the 8pm highlights show with interest

it seems when i big us up we fail spectaculally and when i doubt them (India/SA and first half of Dutch game) they tend to respond and make me look a little stupid, so with all this in mind ...........

Big game on Friday, Bangladesh will be keen to bounce back from their humiliation at the hands of The Windies ansd with England proving at various times of this tournament that we can't bat, bowl or field, don't know how to bat during a powerplay or indeed when to take it, don't know the best XI on any given surface and don't know who to bowl and when while we are in the field i can only see a resounding home win coming up

That should do the trick :whistling:

Just seen the highlights - shoddy at the start, but great bowling. Christ, haven't been that tense about cricket since the Ashes (name a year, any year).

To be honest I haven't regarded England as a decent one day side since the early 90s, so apart from losing to Ireland, I'm surprisingly pleased with how we've done so far.

India and South Africa are both very good sides, and to be unbeaten against both of them is definitely above par for my expectations. Now, I'm with Blueblood however, and fully expect to see us lose to Bangladesh!

The South African who works here is decidedly less chirpy this morning... Surprising, as he was quite vocal after the Ireland game.

KP out of the rest of the world cup, replaced by Morgan.

Run wise perhaps no great loss, but further disruption to the teams plans...... Ravi to open maybe? I like him lower middle order as he can clear the ropes and score greater than a run a ball when chasing or setting a target, but playing Bell or Trott opening with Strauss is a bit one paced and Prior is only other option and he has repeatedly failed there (though he has failed everywhere really.....).

While Ravi has done the job before I think Trott will step up to open. Strauss has been in pretty good form and scoring at better than one a ball, and Trott goes along at his own pace. Morgan can come in at his seemingly preferred position at 6 and hopefully become the finisher again.

Unless Prior opens, surely Prior has to come in at 6 (unless we dispense with the woeful Yardy), with Morgan and Bopara at 4 and 5.....christ that looks like a long tail!

On balance I think I would be tempted to get Prior / Bopara to open in the old pinch hitter role if the pitch is a batting paradise, and Trott if it is a pitch like the one we have just played on. Prior opening at least makes us look like having a bit of depth down the order.....

Prior hasn't covered himself in glory in any role in the batting order in the ODI side, and he may be best suited to opening. In Yardy's defence he isn't Tredwell. Looking at the XI who played yesterday 10 have first class 100's which suggests they can hold a bat at least, apart possibly from when the scoring rate needs to be picked up. Overall I think having Morgan back is a good thing, not only for his batting, as KP has become a bit of a liability in the field of late, possibly due to his hernia.

The trouble is with Capey going, we don't even have one part-time spinner to complement Swann. That means Yardy (or Tredwell) will be picked.

Personally I think both Ravi and Colly are better ODI bowlers than Yardy, yet Yardy is being picked as a specialist bowler.

Collingwood actually has more ODI wickets than Yardy has List A wickets and Bopara has more List A wickets, a substantially better ODI and List A average, a substantially better ODI and List A strike-rate, more ODI and List A 4 wicket hauls than Yardy. The only criteria that Yardy comes out better in, is economy-rate and at ODIs the difference is 0.23, which is 2 runs a game, a figure that Bopara, even with his patchy fielding of late, will save in the field over the lumbering Yardy.
