Actually any one of the EU 27 was free to go it alone and do what the UK did.The reason they didn't was because they assumed (wrongly as it turned out) that the EU's greater bargaining power to ensure supplies at a cheaper price would work in their favour.QED.

15 months ago we were told us Brits would die due to not getting vital medical supplies from Europe.....Now its us that will save you. Of course as a teacher you know history always repeats itself :Winking:

As a political scientist I know that (according to Marx) "History always repeats itself:the first time as tragedy ,the second time as farce." which is the full quote.

Not sure about the veracity of your first comment either.

With the bill for testing and tracking now at £37b. If owned the company and controlled politicians i would want plenty more testing. £1500 for every family in Britain so far, thats almost enough for everyones nan to have her own ventilator......Nice work if you can get it.

Only certain chums of you know who can, apparently.:Winking:

The Republic have now suspended the Oxford vaccine.

That's interesting.Spain did a few days ago too but I'm sure they'll be forced to reintroduce it soon.Heard a few horror stories of "younger" people ie in their 30/40's here having bad flu like symptoms for a couple of days after having had the Oxford vaccine here.Doen't seem to affect older people ie in their 60's in the UK anywhere near as badly.

The mind boggles doesn't it, it seems to be working here (as you say) with the older folk and is reducing the infection rate.

Did Spain have any deaths that were related to the vaccine?

Seeing as the EU vaccine program has been slow, taking away one of the largest maurfacturers does seem to be a gamble.

I've said it before, every medicine comes with risks. I'm no scientist but I'm sure more research will be carried out and the vaccine will be tweaked.

1.
No deaths that I'm aware of.Just think they had a hiisy fit when the news of the Denmark suspension came out.

2.FWIW, I tend to agree.

News from a care home in Exmouth of 9 residents dead and a couple in hospital. Obviously the vaccine hasn't worked for them and will it lead to care homes being close to families again.

Do you have a source? I can only see articles from yesterday saying 3 deaths, 33 positive cases. Also a police investigation has been started, seems like there is probably more to this story.

We have had some local care homes develop COVID in the home despite all of the residents receiving their vaccines.
Of the home (and i wont give details here on a forum) not one resident required hospital admission due to the COVID. 2 residents did required hospital admission but that was due to other physical health needs as by default most people that go into a care home are a) Elderly or B) Frail.

Whilst out and about on home visits last week it was good to see most of the homes opening their doors again to families.

Thanks for that update.

It's fair to say, the vaccine actually works then. Berfore it would have ripped through a care home with the old either dying or needing hospital care. That's promising news, the vaccine is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

I've received a text from NHSvaccine stating "
NHS vaccine booking service: You are eligible for a free COVID-19 vaccination because of an underlying health condition. The vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19. If you haven't already booked with a local GP you can book now at https://www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination or by calling 119"

I'm 37 and the only underlying health condition I have is photosensitive epilepsy (which has resulted in me having just 5 seizures in my entire lifetime). I'm pretty sure this condition is not on any list that bumps me up the queue. Unless my doctor has some test results he's not sharing with me I can't see how I've become eligible?

Is this a con text or a genuine one. I'm happy to get a vaccine, but would prefer to get one when it's my age groups turn

That's very honourable of you to say that.

No it is genuine - last week we were vaccinating people suffering from the identical condition you have and had several different ages come through our doors.
interestingly we also had several teachers attending to.

It's the right thing to do. If I had contact with elderly people or those of greater risk then I'd have it. But I work in an office (or at least I'd did 13 months ago) and have no contact with anyone other than my wife and my two young kids.

I'll have a word with my GP. I wasn't aware my condition would put me at greater risk. I would imagine those with severe epilepsy would be included as they could have trips to hospitals in a regular basis.

Last time I saw my doctor must've been 8 years ago when I changed doctors and I had to go in to complete a health assessment questionnaire and to measure my height and weight.

Take the jab my friend, you're entitled to it and don't feel bad.

Surely the point is to make sure that school children aren't spreading the virus? (I believe the transmission rate in schools is 0.40 %)..

I just don’t understand it to be honest. It’s being proven vaccines are preventing hospitalisations and deaths yet we’re testing millions of healthy people.

For some reason they have also changed the guidance on lateral flow tests for school children which has been the same the whole way through the pandemic so many with false positives are having to stay at home. The whole way through a positive lateral flow with a negative PCR means you don’t have to self isolate, this has been changed for school children who still have to isolate with a negative PCR. My mum is an assistant in a school and if a teacher has a negative follow up PCR they do not have to self isolate. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Inevitably, the virus is being spread in schools.Lateral flow tests are cheap and easy to adminster. They are a quick way of finding out the prevalence of the virus.

FWIW,I happen to agree with your point that there would appear to be no need to self isolate if a positive lateral flow test is followed up by a negative PCR test.

Can anyone answer please the accuracy of the body temp checks and how that relates to unwell/covid?
Should not a high temp preclude school anyway? do non symptom persons have high temperature?

The costs of the test trace need review for corruption?
The cost of PPE need review for corruption?

Both of those are subject to National Audit inspection as will they both before the Public Accounts Committee. The fact that we have had to throw an awful lot of money at these does not signify corruption.

Vaccination totals up to, and including, yesterday

First dose total: 24.196,211

Second Dose total: 1,584,909

Pretty impressive.
