interestingly, they wrote to me today confirming that mine to Texas on 2nd April is still scheduled to fly! How does that work..?

Further email an hour ago apologising that they'd f***** up and we are good to go subject to the obvious. Not holding my breath though

And I can't believe how young, fit and well people are getting their panties in a twist over a virus that will give them nothing more than a cough & headache for a few days.

I understand (as i've said a million times) that at risk groups need protection but the rest of us? Come on.

For us youngsters (still not totally convinced you fit that catergory ?), It’s not so much the health implications, more the societal implications.

Job losses & businesses going bust are the biggest threat. Some of us will be fine, sure. But there’s probably 10m+ who are on low wage, insecure jobs.

If that amount of people became unemployed, almost overnight, due to companies being forced to close, or even cease trading, that is a massive knock on effect across society.

I work with a guy who is 74. He has to work, lives month-to-month on his wages, and has very little savings. He’s worried that If he is told to go home by our bosses, he risks losing his job, and therefore his rented accommodation..... nevermind how he’ll be able to afford food supplies in a couple of months.

How many people in their 70’s will fall into that category?

??

This is where we have to help people out, amongst the stupidity of panic buying etc I have also seen an awful lot of compassion by people and I do think a crisis brings out the best in good people. I'm sure we as the zone could help out like we did at Xmas with the homeless charities? I'm not sure where the best place to donate would be yet but I'm sure it will become clear soon. I'd be happy to contribute to your workmate if a whipround for him was organised?

That’s very kind of you mate. I will of course bare it in mind, but fingers crossed it won’t come to that.

One things for sure, we could all do with being a bit more mindful of one another, when we’re out and about.

I know a lot of the more seasoned generation aren’t up to date with computers & technology, maybe a few of the younger generation could help them with guidance on how to set up online shopping accounts. I’d be happy to advise where I can, if anyone’s stuck or confused by it all.

Mass hysteria in action, but if I happen to contract it and pass it on I am sure I will be hung, drawn, quartered and shot at dawn. Will I feel guilty, yes as most of my family suffers from asthma. So what do I do? I am 71 and don't want to be quarantined, it's my body and don't need anybody to tell me what to do with it.

Typical of this country to waste resources on things that are superfluous.

I have been listening to Boris and he seems to have been briefed and understood things better than a week ago.
HOWEVER.
Have I got this right, in a simple translation, (of a poorly and soft explaination) and the narrative IS
"It is serious for the elderly, and others with medical conditions affecting breathing and heart, it is likely that many of that group, which may be up to 15% of the population, will need NHS care with this virus, AND if that 15% get very ill within just a few weeks it WILL break the NHS.
And by isolating it could be the 15% will still, in the majority, catch the virus OVER THE NEXT 3 MONTHS, really sad and difficult, BUT the NHS has a better chance of coping over that longer scenario."

Sounds like we are edging towards total lockdown - so now even the healthy are urged to avoid public/confined spaces like pubs, theatres and restaurants .... and other people. 'Social distancing' they are calling it - I've practiced that for years!!

That’s got to be football done for this season then. Certainly in terms of people attending. Advising against gatherings and no support from police/ambulance etc?

I think the idea that this season will complete is even more utterly absurd than it was before- but I still expect the EFL to prevaricate and make it a death by a thousand cuts.

Unfortunately the PM just talks in riddles- you shouldn't go to the pub, So your closing down the pubs?- no, So people can still go? - they shouldn't, But the pub doesn't have to shut?- no, So people will still go? why don't you just shut the pubs like other countries?

It's simple- if he closes the pubs he might have to compensate- if he just advises people not to go then its Joe Public that has closed the pubs and sent them under. Naughty Joe Public. It would be nice if we could just have some clarity and make some actual decisions. Most pubs live pretty much hand to mouth and from the waffle they wont be getting any help.

This is the tragedy of all this- shopkeepers, small businessmen and self-employed will take the brunt.. but of course even this is secondary to those that end up paying a higher price.

Well, the experts say they are now 90% sure the coronavirus came from Bats.(Still looking into it). Probably in the wet market in Wuhan. In some places in the world, eating Bats is illegal due to the danger of zoonotic diseases. Bats have been known to carry the Ebola virus and Marburg virus, passing them on to humans that come into contact with them. They may also host henipaviruses and strains of rabies. So it now looks like coronavirus might be added to that list.
In some places in Africa, and in China, they catch huge numbers of Bats in nets. In China they have a myth that eating Bats or Bat soup prolongs good health.
A Bat is not a rodent like some think, and not related to a Rat. But there's obviously some things a human shouldn't eat, including Bats and Rats, which both carry diseases/virus.
How do we get these Countries to stop eating Bats? As one day they might pass on a disease or virus that is fatal to all, and that we can't cure.

Presumably if the government enforce closures then the financial responsibility will hit the government and/or the insurance industry. There are gigs going ahead this weekend and there will be no refunds for anyone who decides not to turn up. If the government shut the venue down then refunds will largely be payable with insurers footing the bill.
I assume its where the financial responsibility lies that means they are advising and not legislating.

Precisely- this it seems for now is a bigger priority than ensuring advice is followed. Now if you are a pub and you are forced to shut there is the possibility either that you can claim on insurance if you are lucky enough to have business continuity insurance, or go to the landlord and sort (or try to) a rent holiday or whatever. And then finally expect some help from the Gov. But no. The insurer and landlord will no doubt currently say well you don't have to close- that's your choice we ain't helping.

If no emergency services for events.....no way can they go on.....As Kent said Boris OUR LEADER should have been given a direct yes or no question which he couldn't waffle on. If you want people not to do something tell them ,don't pass the buck. Unfortunately financial considerations are still affecting health decisions

Certainly should focus minds on the importance of maintaining (indeed improving further) food standards and making it a condition of trade.

Frankly, after seeing the pictures and videos of what the Chinese get upto with their “eating habits”, I believe they should be ****ing ashamed of themselves.

An absolutely disgraceful, barbaric, Stone Age way to behave.

Will they amend their ways? No chance. Should they face scrutiny & condemnation from the rest of the World? Absolutely.
