I know I'll get shot down for this and it hurts to even suggest it. Surely with rates rising and it now seems to be rife within clubs as the number of postponements tells us football should be brought to a halt.

In the games I've been watching spitting has increased, players are man hugging half the other team instead of a fist pump or whatever its called. And that's just for starters.

Load your rifles.

No, I make you right. It was only a matter of time before hugging and that came back into play, I think a month cessation would be a good idea right about now, however difficult that may be.

I think it's coming, having different team coaches travelling all over the country from different tiers doesnt make sense. Not sure how lower league football will survive this if it does get curtailed.

Sadly it may put some closer to the brink again.

The minor silver lining is there are no outgoings for coach hire, hotels, food and drink for away trips. For home games there is still the small amount of stewards and such like to pay as well as floodlights. And in the last month Uncle Ron has had to cough up win bonuses.

The final straw for me was seeing John Terry walking around the pitch with his mistletoe to greet his old mates on the Chelsea back room team.

Ricey makes a reasoned point about the numbers, and percentage, also more people are being tested without symptoms and that also makes it more comparing apples and oranges.
Still people shop in families, not individuals, still a quick pop into a garage or newsagent without a mask, still the concept of space, inside and outside hasn't been learnt.
This thread answers the question you and Ricey had about the numbers. The cases are increasing even though there's been a drop in testing over the Christmas period (hence the positive rate going up). It's not the case of 'test more find more' as it sometimes has been.

This is really worrying, as the restrictions aren't working now and we haven't yet seen the full impact of Christmas.

It would appear that the virus is out of control again - that’s if we ever had it under some semblance of control in the first place - So the inevitable stopping and shutting down of most industries will come into effect at some point in the near future.

As for football, shutting it down temporarily - for one month, say - is a pointless task. The players will still need to be in training, so they are prepared & ready to go again, as and when the restrictions are lifted.

On top of that, another stumbling block would be the fixture list. This season already has lots of games being fit into a tight schedule... including the Euro’s which are set to begin almost immediately following the end of our season.

So far as I see it, the football authorities have two options; continue as it is now and hope for the best, or curtail/void the season.

If the latter were to happen, there would almost certainly need to be another handout from those up above, just to keep teams alive.

One thing is for sure though, the FA should make an example of the Spurs and West Ham players who breached the rules over Christmas. If you’re dumb enough to get caught by posting a picture on social media, you deserve all you ****ing get, in my eyes.

Anyway, in today’s anecdotal news, A guy I work with, lost one of his friends to Covid over the weekend. By all accounts he was a fit, healthy & active guy who was absolutely destroyed by the virus. He was 32.

Make no mistake, this second wave is picking up momentum, and things are sure to get worse before they get better.

And to think, all the hard work and effort that people put in during the Spring, Summer & Autumn months seems to have been for nothing now.

Very interesting and informative, couple of questions, it says no slowdown even though been in tier 4 for 2 weeks - is 2 weeks long enough to be seeing any impact - or is the impact still to be seen in the next week or so? Schools have been shut for at least 2 weeks - are we saying shutting schools has had no impact?

Agree 1000%, absolute disgrace.

Condolences to your colleagues friend - it's down to all of us to reduce our movement as much as possible to beat this - just because shops are open doesn't mean you have to go shopping.

I know now personally 8 people who have had or have Covid. 3 of these have died and one, my cousin, is only in his fifties with no underlying conditions and is in Southend hospital right now. The new strain doesnt take any prisoners.

just because shops are open doesn't mean you have to go shopping.

That in itself is a paradox of mental proportions.

I can do a click-and-collect order from Argos or Smyths... but during my journey, I’m met with a radio advert/warning telling me to only leave the house for essential reasons such as work, food shopping or medical attention.

The ambiguity behind the “guidance”, is as cunning as ever. We’ll leave shops open for click and collect, but whatever you do, you mustn’t go there. ****ing jokers ??

Yep, I feel this new strain isn’t receiving the due care and attention that it deserves from some quarters of society.

A lot of people around my age (34) and younger especially aren’t bothered, as it’s being treated with the approach that they’ll be alright, because the stats are in their favour.

But the way someone explained this whole risk factor to me months ago, was that If I were offered 100 crates of my favourite beer - for free - but that one can, in one of those crates was laced with something that might actually kill me, would I be so quick to drink them or pass them out amoung friends or family? Is the risk worth the reward? The answer to that, for me at least, is simple.

They are are not. They are commercial premises and come under different laws nationally and locally Including insurance, access by officials and fire regulations Etc.

Shops are private properties with a right to public access. Who they wish to sell to and what items is determined by the owner.

How anyone can be be deemed exempt from wearing a mask and allowed to cough and splutter inside any shop is ridiculous, more so in food shops. Can’t stand a mask myself being bronchial but will always wear when out shopping.

Interesting the comments on the enforcement of face masks. I do make people right that it should be a clearly stated law with a fixed punishment. The enforcement by the police could be an issue though down to the strain the police force is under. They are low on numbers due those who are at risk or those who live with high risk persons not physically going to work. The ones who are left are working 12hr plus days just to get the paperwork sorted. My other half went in at 5am yesterday and didn't get home until nearly 9pm was a similar story on Saturday as well. The police wouldn't be able to take these calls, they don't have the capacity to be popping down to the supermarket every time somebody refuses to put on a mask. I don't know the answer? I've heard people suggest the Army, not sure if that is a starter or not but i'm pretty sure you wouldn't see many people arguing with them!

With me it would depend on which family members I could include.

I’d agree that this is the case especially around here, but also the older crowd (65 plus) seem to be quite bad. I think people are just fed up of the restrictions and take the risk. Shut schools, shut workplaces but people are still mixing indoors that’s the problem, especially with pubs and restaurants closed and showing no signs of opening. What I gather is that everyone has their own version of “the rules” and how the hell do you enforce that? Someone I know had a family member die of Covid, her mum in ICU and still had family and friends over at Christmas. Now she’s tested positive. How do you get through to people like that? Hopefully now Christmas and NY is over people might calm down the socialising and having to be near other people. We are so close to getting the vaccines rolled out ..

This is one area I do kind of sympathise. When I say younger I mean teens and early 20's. I think of how I was in my teens and how often I went out and what my attitude was like, I'm pretty sure a teenage me would be bending the rules. I think if there is an interpretation of the rules that allows youngsters to bend the rules, or even break them with what they think is a valid excuse, then they will. Us guys in our 30's (I still have a few months left in my 30s haha) should know better.

I would be amazed if none of our squad haven't breached the rules but then again none of them are household names - some even in their own households.

Oh for sure. Listen, I totally get it and chances are I would be doing exactly the same.

But some of these youngsters either have already, or are going to eventually learn the hard way at some point.... and in some cases I dare say it would/will have been completely avoidable.
