Coronavirus (Non-Politics)

I see this morning they’re drafting in the military to help with testing in secondary schools. Hopefully that’ll help things go slightly more smoothly but we’re in for a tough Jan I think.

Regards the Nightingales, the Govt must’ve known there were no staff to work in them. Without getting political it’s a bit of a shambles innit?
I don't think it's political to simply point out that the govt have failed us all badly in their response to the pandemic.

For the first time I now know people testing positive. Obviously the testing regime has significantly ramped up since earlier in the year - I don't know anyone hospitalised, so none of them would've even been tested during the first wave.

One family dad and 2 kids tested positive, mum and 1 kid negative. Both adults felt ill with symptons, dad first by a few days, he tested positive, When mum started feeling ill she and the kids got tested. Seems quite odd.

These are pretty scary figures announced today:

A little bit more detail on the record 53,135 coronavirus cases that have been reported in the UK.
It is a rise of more than 11,000 confirmed virus cases on yesterday's figure of 41,385 - which had been the highest daily cases figure until now.
The latest cases data brings the total number of confirmed cases in the UK to 2,382,865.
The further 414 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test takes the UK death toll to 71,567, according to the government's coronavirus dashboard.

So why is the rate so high in this part of Essex? Is it because there are many folk in the Borough that have paid no regard to sensible precautions? Is it because there are a lot of Londoners and other out of towners that still come down to Southend and bring the new strain of the virus with them? Is it because this latest strand of the virus is more virulent in terms of the speed of spread? Or is it a mix of all those things? I reckon the last one.

Either way, we are now in pretty dire straits in our town and now is the time for everyone to play their part, even if they don't believe what is happening. And although the second vaccine has just been approved it will take months before all parties have been vaccinated and during that time there is even more need for caution otherwise the infection rate will be too high for the vaccine to bring under control.

Don't forget that the rate is high because of all the extra testing going on, I've seen plenty of people on social media saying they've had confirmed cases in their household (nearly all asymptomatic or very minor) because a lot of schools have arranged for home testing prior to going back to school.

Having said that, I've also seen plenty of evidence on social media of people actively socialising over the Christmas period outside of their household bubbles. Mostly young, early 20s - and that's where the problem is. They're the most sceptical and least likely to curtail their social lives as much as the majority of us have.
