Conservative Leadership Contest

Theresa May is being very consistent in her assertion that she will honour the country's vote and Brexit will happen. I believe she will make that happen, when is the burning question.

Yes she will be obliged to. Honour the country's vote? No there is no question of honour in it. The only reason Brexit will happen is for the very same reason we were offered a referendum in the first place................to keep the Tory Party in one piece.

an odd concept as the whole referendum was carried out in a thoroughly dishonest manner and then within two weeks all of the major players had ****ed off and left us to pick up the pieces

There's the problem ***. I'd pick you up on the "all the major players had ****ed off" comment but you're right. Corbyn could and should have been a major player and might had made an impact had he not showed himself incapable of mustering even the faintest charge. Now we are, as you say, picking up the pieces and despite your valid efforts to argue the contrary ("look, look at the Tories!!"), the opposition is in every bit as much disarray as the party in power. If Corbyn does us all a favour and ****s off with the rest of the sorry shower, we might have a chance of getting some effective politicians in play. I'm not holding my breath though.

Where are these effective politicians in the Labour Party ? :nope:

Wanted Leadsom, but got May. Pretty happy to be honest and pretty confident that she'd mop the floor with Corbyn, Eagle or any of the the other unworthy Labour mob. Any GE arranged in the next few months would be an absolute disaster for Labour and they'd lose more seats in the process.

so the Tory "disarray" lasted 3 weeks in total. The Labour mess has been ongoing since May 2015 and if we're being completely honest it all fell to pieces with the downward spiral beginning when Bliar stepped aside.

Corbyn's not going anywhere,

He was elected party leader just nine months ago with the greatest majority any PLP leader has ever had.

During the referendum he told the truth, which is not particularly newsworthy. He was never a Europhile but he toured the country and made speeches to Remain. But just did it in a decent and valid way which though is more decent and valid does is not as exciting as those screaming lies.
He can't really **** off as he has a massive mandate from the membership and no other Labour MP has that. Yes it is a tricky situation but him ****ing off does not solve the issues.
To be fair Cameron, Johnson and Farage ****ing off doesn't solve any issues either at the current time.

What was it about Leadsom caught your attention and support?

amended for correctness. although, some would say, the Uk has not had a true Labour government since 1979.........personally, I would argue it goes back even earlier than that, to 1951.
To say that Corbyn is unelectable, rather like Michael Foot before him, I would claim, is not primarily down to the cult of personality but to political philosophy. Labour did some brilliant things for a Britain emerging from the Second World War but its relevance and place in the present capitalist world is now questionable. Its only become electable when it proposes a pale imitation of the Conservative government it seeks to follow. It's an awful thing to say but you may well wonder, what is the purpose of democracy when you live in a world where there is a Henry Ford choice.........."you can have any colour as long as it's black?" Capitalism is going through a huge crisis in Europe and I really don't know what the answer is, apart from that it's not going back to socialism. Drastic changes are required to redress the enormous inequalities in our society. Cameron used glib phrases as 'one nation conservatism' as the gap got even wider and May like her predecessor Thatcher, now talks of 'a country that works for everyone' and 'building a better Britain for everyone' ............I'll believe it when I see it!

I felt she seemed an unflappable person in the face of stressful times who would guide us through and keep everyone calm. I guess that wasn't true as she has been "flapped" today.

Good post by Yogi as well who rightly observes that it hasn't worked for a long time for the "true" Labour. Or at least that kind of politics just isn't the flavour of the nation these days. "Tory Lite" is the best chance Labour have of gaining power once more. JC simply wont appeal to more than that of his cult following and I dare say Eagle wouldn't offer anything more palatable.

I think May comes into power with a lot of support, she seems like she'll be a strong leader and people generally like leaders with strength.

Snap poll today put 62% people backing May as a better leader than the 18% that said Corbyn. That's a huge majority!

Bring it on.The only snap poll that counts is the one decided by the British electorate at a General Election.

so you backed her because she was unflappable and a few days later she flapped so much she flew off!

I was genuinely interested in your reasons but seems there was just one and then you quickly move on to other things!
Snap poll then - presumable not in London, Bristol, Oldham or Sheffield..... To be fair if the poll was today then it was as May was declared leader of her party and the same day that it was confirmed Corbyn has to face a vote for leadership of his party - so the timing will skewer the results of that.

What would be the point in Labour being Tory lite - we have the Lib Dems for that.

Can I just say....George Osborne is alleged to be a fan of NWA - which is surprising, but I wouldn't be surprised if Theresa May was a fan of their track '**** The Police'
