Breaking News Charley Kendall Signs

Looking at woking fan forum it seems they quite liked his work rate and would of preferred to keep him over others! Gets carded quite a bit though.

Anyone else not impressed by long range goals for a loosing team? Or just me ?

We need someone who can create chances and score.

What's his playing style like? I've read that he's a bit of a threat and a handful to defend on his day.

Anyone seen him play?

Edit* I technically have, but don't remember him

The Shrimpers are delighted to announce the signing of striker Charley Kendall, who arrives on an 18-month contract with a club option.

Kendall, who turns 24 on Sunday and joins from fellow Vanarama National League club Woking, was born in Eastbourne and spent five years in Queens Park Rangers’ academy before joining his hometown club on loan.

He netted 30 goals across a few spells for the Sports, 25 of them coming in the 2021/22 National League South season.

The forward signed for Lincoln City in 2022 and scored on his debut for them, which came in an EFL Cup game.

While at the Imps, Kendall spent time out on loan at Sutton United, who were in League Two at the time, as well as Bromley and Dagenham & Redbridge.

He left Lincoln permanently in January of this year and added to his experience in the National League by signing for Woking.

Kendall, who will wear shirt number 24 at Roots Hall, played 35 league games for the Cards this calendar year, scoring seven goals.

Upon arriving in SS2, Charley said: “It feels really good to be here. It’s a massive club with a massive following and I’m really excited. Any club you go to, the fanbase is one of the biggest things you look for so that was a big part of me coming here.

“There’s a lot of experienced boys here so hopefully I can learn from them and help them with a thing or two myself as well.
“I bring high energy and a goal threat; I like to wear the other team down and score as many goals as possible.”

Head Coach Kevin Maher added: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to get this deal over the line and bring Charley to the football club. Not only is he a talented striker, but the club have done well to get such a good deal for us.

“Charley’s attributes will be a great fit for the squad and our forward line. He comes with a strong understanding of the division too despite still being a relatively young man at 23 years old.

“We feel Charley’s best years are still ahead of him, and we’re excited to work with him on the training ground to get the best out of him.”

Buy tickets to witness his potential debut tomorrow!

Interesting comment re "but the club have done well to get such a good deal for us". Suggests that we got him without a fee?

Welcome to the Thames Estuary Galacticos, Charley!!!

I wonder if there will be outgoings for us. Leaves us with 6 strikers now if you count Wood.
What strikers are out of contract end of season - Wood, Bonne any others? Waldron?

Maybe it's an early move for next season rather than an imminent move, although OBvs strong rumour pepple loan will be terminated by Luton.

Has there been a reliable source RE: Pepple?

I'll be honest a say I thought the same thing when we signed Cardwell with maybe the exception of one season at Chorley, and that turned alright.
As I said, I will be more than happy to eat my words but for me its a very similar sighing to the previous strikers who between them haven't done much.

Also, we don't get the ball forward quick enough for any of them to really get a sniff so I would have preferred to sign someone more creative on the wings/middle who make make things happen.

I find it mental people already shunning him / doubting him. There have been plenty examples of players being average/poor at one club then amazing at another. Gary Hooper and Charlie MacDonald come into mind. Then obviously for us we've had Barry Corr, Simon Cox, Tom Hopper (until his injury).

Another example was Paul Mullin, looked to be a League Two journeyman. Hadn't done much at Morecambe, Tranmere or Swindon. Then turns up at Cambridge and then does amazingly.

I get everyone is entitled to opinions etc but at least give him a chance. As it's been reported, we've been after him for quite some while (I think we tried signing him when he went to Daggers) so it's hardly a bottom of the barrel signing.

Would people write off Josh Kelly if we were to sign him? Hasn't had a great season at Wombles but wouldn't be surprised if we were still monitoring him.

And I presume Kendall is match fit. Might well be on the subs bench tomorrow, yes?

No idea who will make way for him though ..... unless someone is playing with an injury & can be rested. [shoulder shrug]

More likely on the bench, and a late sub for Bim or MaCauley.
