Breaking News Charley Kendall Signs

I thought Kendall was a bit of a handful when we played Woking. Has that "nasty" streak that forwards need, he's quick and was always moving and managed to buy a few fouls. Reminded me a bit of Cheek in his younger days.
I thought the same, was quite pleased when they took him off in the second half.

Waldron was 'prolific' from only 1 league below. The step up is unbelievably difficult. Of course, it can happen but for every Langstaff, there will be 20 Goodship's.

Although, I believe we are trying to go down the route of looking at local talent but that will probably be players that are even younger.

I agree - the step up is significant. Cardwell got there but it took a little while. Walden needs more game time so it can be an elongated process.

I wonder if the management team have one eye on the 2025/26 season already (that is not a bad thing or criticism by the way).

I reckon Luton would be a bit silly to do that. Shown some promise and looks like he could be a real player, but he’s scored 7 goals in 17 appearances, 3 of which came against an Isthmian League North Division side.

Best thing they could do is leave him with us for the remainder of the season. 4 goals in 15 games at NL level doesn’t suggest he’s a League One or Two player at this stage in his career. Love the guy, but still got lots to learn and needs to keep playing regularly.

Thats my thinking as well. Any player we bring in on a permanent contract must be for the long term and not short. I still think if we can have a decent run in the new year that we can make the play offs. Weve had an inconsistent season but remain two wins outside the play offs. We need to build a team capable of getting us right up there next season if in NL but also one eye on the possibility of L2. Will be interesting to see how many players we bring in over the next month or so and the calibre. Kev has mentioned many times we know what we want and the areas we need to strengthen and as Boy Wonder mentioned weve been in for Kendall before so he must be one on the Whiteboard. if they think he can do a job thats good enough for me.

We do if there is a budget or were setting up players incoming to potentially fail

There is budget available.

We need a striker, as well as the other positions mentioned.

I expect there will be outgoings to offset the incomings too. I could easily see Waldron going out on loan as and when we bring in a new striker. He needs minutes and a chance to get himself fully fit, which he can’t do without reserve/under 23/behind closed doors matches. A month or two on loan could be just what the doctor ordered.

Kendall has scored goals at the level below us. How many levels below did Goodship score his goals?

This “smells” nothing like Goodship.

We’ve been in for Kendall since two summers ago. We have a bid, for a fee (but obviously COSU aren’t putting money in on the footballing side) rejected in the summer just gone.

This couldn’t be any further than a “Goodship” signing. Whilst he may or may not work out better than Goodship did, it isn’t a panic signing, isn’t a desperation signing, and isn’t a “Goodship” signing.

Glad to see we are writing him off already.
Like I've said before, this is so depressingly familiar. Stats that on the whole prove nothing are used by people to determine if someone is a good player or not.

It's not about their current stats. It's more to do with whether the coaching team feel there's a player in there that can be coached, improved and turned into a better player. We're not financially able to buy the finished product, especially with goalscorers, so we have to look at potential, not stats. At some point we then sell them on for a profit and move on. That's where KM etc earn their money.

The problem is that a lot of the time people who write a player off based on stats and nothing more will be right, because (for an infinite number of reasons) it might not work out, but that doesn't mean they're right for the reason they think they are.

This is the the thing, stats aren't always the best indicator. There are so many more factions to it. Age is the biggest one. If a player comes in as a 30 year old and has only averaged 2 goals a season, then of course worry. But if they are a younger player comes in with similar stats but still has room for development, worry shouldn't be the first port of call.

Mooney came in with great stats and it just didn't work out. Cardwell came in with less than desirable stats and he was brilliant for us. There is always more to it.

As you state, it's about what the coaches can get out of the player. Pepple will move on at some point and may never establish that same form, it happens.

Let's all just embrace the fact we can actually go out into the market now, instead of worrying if the van is parked over the manhole cover or not.

Smells of Goodship

Beggars can't be choosers but I feel he will be underwhelming, more so as we don't really create chances for our strikers. Would much prefer a player like Dackers who while not scoring much, is a handful and links the midfield and attack or maybe a bigger unit a la Quigley.
Goodship scored his goals two levels below where Kendall got his. He then signed for us when we were L1. He was older than Kendall and making a jump of 4 divisions whereas Kendall is moving **checks notes** no divisions.

Goodship lacked the play strength to play down the middle whereas Kendall has been trusted in that role.

Kendall has been sought after by several clubs at our level. Bromley, Sutton, Daggers all had him on loan before Woking signed him. Goodship in contrast did not hang around at our level.

Kendall might or might not be a fit for us but he’s not Goodship.

Interestingly, Kendall did move to League One like Goodship did, signing for Lincoln in January 2022. The big difference was, Goodship was expected to play in a struggling team in League One without having the time to adapt to the jump and Kendall was allowed to immediately go back on loan to Eastbourne to learn his trade.

If we get him, he will be a player with 70 appearances at National League level. He is not someone who doesn't know the league. That is so important.

Kendall turns 24 in 2 days time. Happy Birthday Charley. 69 appearances since 2023 scoring 10 goals , is not shabby either with no specific injury concerns ? Fits the profile also described as extremely dedicated lad
