Having supported SUFC for 40 odd years we have certainly been In worse positions than this, but that was usually when we had a limited budget & expectations. With all the pre-season hubris & ‘big name’ signings Brown cannot be judged by that standard & must go now. The successful years I enjoyed under Dave Smith, Dave Webb & of course Steve Tilden were achieved by hungry players & competent motivators.

The Only reason I could fathom for Ron not pulling the trigger now, is money. Either it'd cost too much, or there's more to the "Phil owns shares" rumour than meets the eye.

It may cost Ron a lot more to get rid of Phil than a normal manager under contract as he would also have to purchase back the shares he gave him.

10th June 2015 said:
PHIL Brown will become a share-holder in Southend United when he signs a unique new contract with the club.

The Shrimpers boss expects to finally put pen to paper on a three year deal this week.

And an innovative clause inserted in the contract will see Brown handed shares in the League One side which he can sell back to chairman Ron Martin when he leaves Roots Hall.

“It’s the clauses in the contract that have taken a while to sort out and one of them will see me become a share-holder in the football club,” said Brown, 56.

“We’ve had to work that out and it’s something the League Manager’s Association said they have never seen before.

“They think it’s very innovative of the chairman because it’s a clause which will reward a manager for success.

“I do also think it’s a great time to be investing in Southend United due to us having won promotion and with the plans for the new stadium so it’s something I’m happy about.

“And I also expect to sign the contract this week.”

The deal is believed to be one of the first of its kind in the country.

But it is a success related clause chairman Martin has long thought of introducing.

“It’s an innovative deal but it’s incentive based and will reward continuity which I think is important,” said the Shrimpers supremo.

“Phil will be able to cash the shares in and sell them to me when he leaves the football club and the better he does the more money he will get back.”

However, once Brown does sign the new deal, he is keen to immediately make sure assistant manager Dave Penney and first team coach Graham Coughlan follow suit.

“I want them to be the next two to sign after my situation is sorted and I do expect a lot more to be happening in the next two weeks,” Brown added.

who was it who got done fighting outside a club and police involved - Nile Ranger ?

I think Brown will stay, we will sign 3 or 4 players in the window and finish mid table. Not particularly want him here just think that is what will happen.

The trouble now is the fans will turn on Brown at every poor result,
this affects team performances and gates will reduce.
Is Ron going to be happy with this?

Agreed. I wanted him gone a few weeks ago. However, I think he’ll do enough to keep us safe and will be here to the end of the season. Ron won’t be pulling the trigger just yet.

Good job Phil Brown not in charge of getting Adam Barrett photo presentation done, reckon posters would really go to town:winking:

I haven't got the stats to hand but how many games have we won since March/April last year. We finished last season poorly and we are now in trouble. Phil Brown's record over the past nine months is not good. In the time that he has been here not one of his signings have gone on to better themselves at a higher level and brought in transfer cash to the club. Overall it is probably best that he goes rather than trust his judgement in the transfer window. Sad times but big decisions have to be made.

March 2017 W3 D1 L1
April 2017 W3 D0 L4

August 2017 W1 D2 L1
September 2017 W3 D2 L2
October 2017 W2 D1 L2
November 2017 W0 D2 L1
December 2017 W2 D0 L4

January 2018 W0 D0 L2

That works out to:

March 2017 2 points per game
April 2017 1.29 points per game

August 2017 1.25 points per game
September 2017 1.57 points per game
October 2017 1.4 points per game
November 2017 0.67 points per game
December 2017 1 point per game

January 2018 0 points per game

Overall, last season was 1.57 points per game.
This season we're running at 1.15.

I suppose Ron would have to buy back the shares even if he waited until the end of the season and let Brown's contract run out so I really hope that isn't a significant amount.

"I wouldn’t have advocated sacking Nile Ranger"

ummm - what is he talking about now ?

"I wouldn't have advocated sacking Nile Ranger if I thought I was going to miss him" is a fuller quote. He seems to think he can bring in someone better who can score more goals. I hope so. From his post match interview he clearly has no intention of walking and is suggesting he can bring in enough quality players in the January sales to turn things around. Let's hope he picks up more bargains than he did in the summer.

Gobsmacked that this isn't almost 100% out - what do the 'remainers' see that I can't?

There are 2 people who voted to replace me and John:- andygb42, Dubai, Hammer, Jam_Man, nevereatwhitesnow, OldWilliam, wily cayote,

who have also voted to keep Brown :-bertbert, Blueronron, Bolton Shrimper, Brett Angle, Colchester John, Dubai, dusterman, Kestrel, mike101, nevereatwhitesnow, Prague Blue, rararblue, rdc3, shrimper61, smudgster

A real win double. Take them out of the equation and it changes things a little.
