Brexit negotiations thread

The European, and to an extent North American, markets for new diesel engined cars is on its knees. That's what all this is about.

That's the primary reason Nissan have moved their planned manufacturing operations to Japan. The vast majority of these gas guzzling 3.2, 3.8 and 4.0 X Trails that were to be built in Sunderland were always destined for the near Asian and Chinese markets. Makes perfect sense to move the manufacturing base nearer to the market and cut costs accordingly. Exactly what James Dyson has done.

Still, makes for a good anti Brexit link dontcha think
Nissan themselves have said Brexit uncertainty was a factor. Also, the recent EU Japanese trade deal means zero tariffs after seven years.

A factor, not because and I never said it wasn't. It's a mountain out of a molehill instigated and perpetuated by the remain complicit media. So there won't be 700 new jobs in Sunderland. Shame but hey ho......life and UK PLC will go on.

And before you call me all the names under the sun for having no empathy just think about it next time you buy something on line and put another nail in the coffin of the local high street (as I do a few times every month)

There's nowt so worse as a bleeding heart hypocrite.

You actually said 'this is what it's ALL about' remember?
As to buying online you have no idea of my shopping habits so to resort to personal abuse merely shows up as usual the paucity of your arguments.

I see May's in NI today.Good luck with that Theresa.

So she's going to Northern Ireland to assure them that she can secure a Brexit deal that avoids a hard border with Eire. An expert today said she's wasting her time as the Irish won't fall for it because they know that the EU wants the hard border and the backstop to remain as it keeps us in the customs union, and that is their main goal, to keep us in the customs union for as long as possible, the Hotel California scenario. All she can give the Irish is empty promises.

Ahem, not an expert no but a journalist from a left leaning rag who is parroting the EU line. He shows just how uninformed and ridiculously one-sided his article is by not referring to the planned court case by David Trimble, who wrote the Good Friday Agreement, demanding that the backstop be removed because it itself contravenes the Good Friday Agreement!

The Good Friday Agreement is not only about keeping an open border people, it is about much more, and the backstop as constructed is itself a very serious breach of the agreement. It just goes to show that the backstop is not at all about maintaining an open border. It is purely about the EU retaining the upper hand for the future relationship negotiations and they will fight tooth and nail to keep that.

The long game is that if the backstop remains as it is, the EU can continue to sail along making no effort to compromise during the free trade talks as they will have the UK over a barrel. They will just stick to entrenched red lines about fishing rights and you name it and if we dont give those things up they will refuse to sign off on our leaving the backstop - and blame us for it. The intention is to keep us tied in so long they can say 'I told you so, it's impossible to leave' and also hope that the UK population gets so utterly tired of trying to leave over a decade that we voluntarily opt to remain just so we can all move on. A truly shady, dodgy den of thieves that I can't wait to be free of.

There again, I don't think you are totally unbiased, are you?!

Did I accidentally give it away that I am not fully aligned with that journalist's perspective?

In truth, I think we all know where we stand on here. I have been trying to just look at the bigger picture, refraining from posting every five minutes as I did at one time. Also making an effort to avoid niggly arguments with people with whom I disagree. May be it's a bit of Brexit fatigue as well.

For the sake of accuracy, contrary to someone's previous post Trimble did not 'write the Good Friday agreement'. As the leader of the largest party in NI at that time, along with John Hume of the SDLP, they were both key figures, but there were six other parties involved so to try to portray it as a one man achievement is very misleading. Whether his attempt at legal action succeeds we will have to wait and see. In any case it is very likely to be overtaken by events in the next few weeks.

No, I was flicking through the tele news and it was one of their own Brexit reporters, and was introduced as ''A report now from (can't remember name) one of our Brexit experts.''

I didn't portray it as a one man achievement - neither intentionally or accidentally, to anyone reading my post objectively. I could have included the caveat "among others" but otherwise the real point in my post remains. As ever though, you have totally overlooked that.

Whether this reaches court doesn't actually matter - that would just test and prove the case - the degree to which the backstop contravenes legal provisions within the Good Friday Agreement is something that expert legal opinion can quite easily take a view on now, as could they make an assessment of the likelihood of success of any court case, based on the strength of the case (i.e. the degree to which the specific wording/formulation of the backstop contravenes specific wording/clauses within the Good Friday Agreement). The court of public opinion would then make up its' own mind sufficiently to throw its' weight either behind or against this aspect of the backstop (which is quite separate from the democratic case currently being discussed in the media).

You said Trimble 'wrote the Good Friday agreement'. Fact: he didn't. Please have the good grace to acknowledge that because your claim was obviously intended to give extra weight to his legal action.

It would be lovely if we could find something we agree on one day! Presumably we agree that we want Southend United to succeed so it must be possible

Her actions seem like those of a desperado, Ronnie. And they'll see through her lying eyes too.

Ah, she was never going to have a peaceful easy feeling about this deal or no deal. I don't know what she's got up her sleeve as the last resort but she certainly won't relinquish power readily for any new kid in town.
