Brexit negotiations thread

I've read some tosh on this thread (as well as some good and constructive debate) but you win the prize for the 'fake news' award of the month for that comment. Well done.

The instant the 52-48 result was announced and after the comment by Farage about a 52-48 result, anyone with more than two brain cells could see what was going to happen.

Thanks for award. My two cells are celebrating.

I'm glad you remember the first referendum in 1975.So do I.You'll also no doubt remember that time around, that about 2/3 of the electorate voted to remain in the EEC (as it then was).

Not sure I'd put that down to Heath's duplicity.Think Wilson's decision to allow the PLP a free vote in the Commons on whether to hold a referendum was what was decisive.

Yeah I do remember it, though at the time I had no interest in politics so I paid no attention. However I have done some research and I think there were a couple of reasons why remain won. The remain campaign had a much larger budget than leave, the public were told that there was no chance of a political union and were also told that thousands of jobs were at risk if we left.

All sounds familiar to 2016.

If you are interested in the 1975 referendum, I'd recommend Robert Saunder's.-Yes to Europe!:The 1975 Referendum and Seventies Britain.

Perhaps you can explain why the remain campaign spent more than leave in 2016 but still lost?

Hey dcblue....quick question. Why have you never posted in any other forum but the Politics one? Do you even support Southend?

If you notice I joined the zone in 2010 but didn't comment on politics forum til this year. I wonder why. Maybe it's the anger and frustration at the actions of a duplicitous government along with the views of posters made me post now. I feel the future of younger generations is more important than if Southend win or lose.
Oh and yes I have supported Southend since 1964 and had a season ticket since early 90's.

Thanks, I will have a look at that.
I think there were several reasons. There was a lot of dissatisfaction with the EU before the referendum and the internet where people could see views not generally aired by the media. However I think main reason was mass immigration.

If you’re so concerned about the future of younger generations then maybe listen to them.

From YouGov:

“Under-25s were more than twice as likely to vote Remain (71%) than Leave (29%). Among over-65s the picture is almost the exact opposite, as 64% of over-65s voted to Leave while only 36% voted to Remain. Among the other age groups, voters aged 24 to 49 narrowly opted for Remain (54%) over leave (46%) while 60% of voters between the ages of 50 and 64 went for Leave.”

From the figures it looks like as you get older the majority moved from remain to leave. Maybe that is the result of experience of working life. In many cultures the elderly are consulted on their wisdom.

Patronising garbage. Young people on the whole are educated and informed.

As a member of the oldest age group, who voted leave, I can attest from personal experience this group contains the most bigoted, racist and xenophobic section of the public imaginable, who hark back to a mythical golden age in the 1950s when Britain was largely white, monocultural and riddled with class distinction and still imagining itself to be a world power (Suez anyone?). It is very encouraging for an oldie like me that young people are so much more open minded, culturally diverse and totally lacking in the ingrained prejudices that my generation exhibits. Sadly, it is my generation that has done its best to blight their future, but maybe, just maybe, there is a chance to reverse this madness.

Just to clarify, by 'this group' I mean my generation of course, not the denizens of Shrimperzone.

Informed and influenced by media and politicians with agendas to push whereas the older generation base their opinions largely on experiences. That's not patronising. I tend to think that's a generally accepted fact.

And just because you're educated and informed does not automatically mean you'll make the right choice.

On the contrary, the blind faith its 'readers' have in the poisonous garbage transmitted by the Mail and Sun demonstrates the exact opposite. These organs exist solely to reinforce and strengthen the deep seated prejudices ingrained in the psyche of so many of my generation.

You've never commented on anything outside of this forum. All a bit odd if you ask me.

I agree completely, which is why I sounded out the opinion of GYS Jnr and his peers before I decided to vote remain.

Who are,of course, the main readership these days.

Inevitable that these rags will go out of business in the next ten years as they become less and less relevant to younger people who get their news from other sources without having their prejudices pandered to.

While I agree with your main point, (and look forward to it ), I'm not so sure that young people (or anyone else for that matter), don't have "their prejudices pandered to" from online sources.
