Post-Match Thread and Ratings Braintree Town 0-1 Southend United

Waldron must get a chance now. Recall a game at home last season where he chased down loose balls and got accurate crosses in which led onto goals. I think he scored a few too in the games he played. Sadly it doesn’t look like Bonne can score. Time for a change. Scrappy game today, but I’ll take the three points. Nice to see Cav back on form.
Dagenham at home last season was it!? He was class that game. I remember another game as well he delivered an outstanding piece of play/ cross which resulted in a goal?

With respect, not sure it is a drought, might be called that if he had been scoring and then hit a dry spell, more of a "nought". I know people will tell me about his all round play, holding up the ball, creating for others etc., but when is a striker not a striker ? Others in the past may not have been the most prolific themselves but did score some as well as setting up team mates, as an old example I give you Gary Moore. I appreciate the game has changed a lot since then but there must be better options out there.
Wrong example Chris. Gary Moore did do untold assists, but he also scored 46 goals in 164 games, which is pretty good for the supporting role he played.

A win is a win however you get them, very flat second half but did what was needed to win, impressed again with golding, has definitely made our defence much better albeit against lesser teams, but like the look of him as a player alot

Was it last season where Maher was often criticised for making subs too late in the game? Think they were often around 75 mins in. So now he's moved to 60 mins it's too early. Maybe it's not the timing of subs but the quality of subs????

It was the right decision to take off Pepple. Braintree couldn’t handle him so resorted to trying to get him sent off and they were getting under his skin. Given he tires anyway and it was a heavy, energy sapping pitch, it made sense to just take him off 5 minutes earlier once he was on a yellow and being targeted.

I’m not necessarily sure it’s about the quality of the subs so much as their qualities. Kendall himself looks a limited player - he has a heavy touch and misplayed several passes but he was still worth the start because of his energy and mobility. We needed energy and running and Bonne was running through quicksand again. That’s not really Walker’s game either although he was assaulted out of the game before he really has a chance to make his mark. I’m not entirely convinced by Danny Waldron and I’m wary of players improving by dint of being out of the side but he’s a better option than Bonne in my opinion as he offers that energy.

We look two different sides: one a decent side when we play with energetic forwards the other a turgid side when we have forwards playing through treacle. A mobile targetman is a must this month as we can’t rely on Bim alone.

Bridge may not have hit top form but we created nothing once he went off. Last year everyone complained we only ever attacked down the left - Maher fixed that problem by letting Wes leave but now the complaint is Bridge doesn’t anything. I think people underestimate how much Bridge occupies defences - just by being out there he stretches teams.

Can’t believe that those around the drum today thought singing negative songs about Bonne in anyway helps him or the team. Charley Kendall now gone 14 games without a goal (4 for us and 10 for Woking). Is there a point coming when fans turn on him and say I don’t care about his contributions, a striker that doesn’t score goals needs to be got shot of?

Two wins on the bounce very welcome but the questions won't go away and they are always the same ones. It was a poor game, Pepple again making all the difference between two uninspiring sides. One moment epitomises the problem. We start a move inside our own half. For once there is plenty of movement off the ball. Braintree defenders scuttling back in disarray. Husin, in acres of space around the centre circle, receives the ball, turns 360 degrees and passes it back, killing any momentum and the prospect of an attempt on goal. Sums up the philosophy of the coaching staff, play it safe and keep possession. The lack of ambition is never going to achieve a playoff challenge. As for the substitutions, words fail.
apart from the playoff challenges of the last 2 seasons out of 2?

Pitch looked awful. Soft, sticky, mudpatches. Horrible team resorting to any way they need to try and win games. Horrible little ground that made it like a cup tie. I guess a lot of their games are similar but without such a big crowd.
I'd like to know the minimum ground standards to be in the NL. Clearly quite poor.
Although roots hall is in great need of attention, at least it's a proper ground with a proper pitch.
Thought under the circumstances our boys slogged through it well.
My MOM was jointly pepple and golding.

it's hardly the manager's fault if one of our subs gets taken out by one of theirs
The entire point being there is no need to change both strikers at that point of the game. We werent in control, we looked off it, and the press from the 2 up top was our strength. Its so unecessary to make those changes at that point of the game.

After visiting Oxford city last season I can’t believe there is any type of National League Ground Standards

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that - Husin is a shadow of the player he was last season and poor Morton must wonder what he’s done wrong to be left on the bench in place of him.

Same is true of Bridge, nowhere near as effective this season as last and was equally pathetic when pushed up front today.

Goodness knows how badly either needs to play to get dropped!

Totally agree with @Boreham Blue about the singing of anti-Bonne songs. You may think you’re clever but I can’t see how it helps the team at all. The bloke’s confidence must already be low so his own, so-called, fans singing songs to destroy it further is utterly brainless. For goodness sake sing positive songs or shut up!

Other than that, an awful ground on an awful day against an awful team - thank goodness we took home all 3-points. I hope I never have to go there again!

We won ugly, bagged the 3 points and kept another clean sheet.

Was it a good watch? No.
Did we take all our chances? No
Can we do better? Yes

Point is, tactics and player availability aside, our boys went out in horrible weather and did absolutely what needed doing!

Just a few months ago, just having a team to watch was our aspiration. The boys we have did well, all put in a big shift and there will be some very tired legs tonight with that pitch.

For what its worth, that pitch was causing more trouble than just being a sticky, muddy potato patch. If you looked closely you would see that the width of the pitch has been significantly reduced, and we were getting caught out a lot and giving away a lot of throws. That's probably why we sat back a bit (too far?) and let them wear themselves out.

Pepple is definitely a class above, first time i have seen the two new boys, both impressed, and I agree that Bridgy is off the boil. Thought that tackle on Walker was GBH..it was appalling to watch and how their player did not get a straight red is beyond me. I just hope he is okay and not out for a while.

Overall, the freezing wind blew away some cobwebs and it was nice to stand up. Reminded me of going to watch games when I was a kid, its rustic and authentic. And bloody freezing!!
