Post-Match Thread and Ratings Braintree Town 0-1 Southend United

I disagree. Coker was 50/50, so half the refs would say play on. As the co commentator said, because Collin got the ball first, it was not a foul, and his momentum carried him onto their player. The Walker foul was atrocious, and purely to take out a player bursting through. It was reckless and dangerous, and should have been a sending off in my opinion. We will wait and see what damage it's done to poor Walker.
Fair opinion, as you say some refs give and some dont so thats fair. I still think as stupid and pointless as the challenge on Walker was, I dont think thats a red, but I can also see why it would be given

Two wins on the bounce very welcome but the questions won't go away and they are always the same ones. It was a poor game, Pepple again making all the difference between two uninspiring sides. One moment epitomises the problem. We start a move inside our own half. For once there is plenty of movement off the ball. Braintree defenders scuttling back in disarray. Husin, in acres of space around the centre circle, receives the ball, turns 360 degrees and passes it back, killing any momentum and the prospect of an attempt on goal. Sums up the philosophy of the coaching staff, play it safe and keep possession. The lack of ambition is never going to achieve a playoff challenge. As for the substitutions, words fail.
Good to see you focusing on the positives

Not the most entertaining of games, but a gritty fought win in an Essex Derby can ne ver be discounted. I agree what previous posts have said re substitutions in fa t I was typing on the OMT that I could see Kev taking Bim off before he collected a second yellow, but I would have left Kendall on despite being less effective than on Boxing Day, he was still causing the Braintree defence problems. As in the case with Ebbsfleet, the subs were less effective and a part from a Coker shot over the bar, we didn't look a threat. Shame Coker didn't square that chance to Bonne who was in space who knows, he (Bonne) might have ended his goal drought.

Ref all but gifted us a win tonight. Paper over cracks imo. Same frustrating issues week in week out. Will always be happy with 3 points, but starting the game with 4 strikers in the squad and finishing with just Bonne is not good enough. These same subs every single game are killing us. 2 for 2 when youre 1-0 and not in control makes no sense whatsoever and almost cost us the win. So extremely frustrating.

Bit unlucky to sub on a striker and have him crocked in the first few mins - could argue that using both striking subs on 60 mins leaves you vulnerable if one gets a knock - but personally I wouldn't take issue with that - Maher was criticised last season for leaving subs too late, so he can't win!

Ugly little game in which I can only say I enjoyed Bim's goal ( there should have been a second) and the three points. Quality was p**s poor, could that be something to do with the pitch?.......didn't look brilliant around the goalmouth. Worried (with reason) when both Kendall and Pepple were substituted. I understood the latter , because of his yellow card. When we lost Walker you just knew how the last twenty were going to play out.......bum, squeeky, etc. Anyway the essential was the three points and on we go, with three games in the next week.

Coker in the build up was a foul (granted they shouldnt have just stopped) and Colin was very borderline penalty. The challenge on Walker was never a red.
I beg to differ. I watched on TV and Clampin was furious that Braintree hadn't been given a foul seconds earlier against Walker and took that frustration out on Walker. He jumped in on Walker with his leading foot in the air knowing full well it would cause damage. 100% red in my opinion

With respect, not sure it is a drought, might be called that if he had been scoring and then hit a dry spell, more of a "nought". I know people will tell me about his all round play, holding up the ball, creating for others etc., but when is a striker not a striker ? Others in the past may not have been the most prolific themselves but did score some as well as setting up team mates - I appreciate the game has changed at lot but there must be better options out there.

One of the worst grounds, coupled with one of the worst peformances i’ve ever seen.

Highlihts - Pepple goal, double cheeseburger and finding 1 of the 4 urinals available for 2,000+ fans.

The most non-league you’ll get

Cold wet and an ugly win. We played well first half and with more composure we could and should have scored 2 or 3 at least. Not sure what was said at HT as we didn’t get going after the break. Thought Bim and Kendall were excellent and starting to form a decent partnership, which makes it odd that they were taken off second half with the score still at 1-0. I would have kept both on and start Walker and Bonne on Saturday. After they both went off the game turned massively in Braintree favour. We made the win considerably harder than it should have been. But sometimes these types of wins are as important as a 3 or 4-0. The defence actually stood up well to the second half onslaught with Golding again impressive my MOM. Taylor maybe not at his best today. Again Husin did ok at best but Bridge again ineffective. Miley had a decent game. Thought both Bridge and Husin should have gone off earlier. 1600 Southend there which is a great effort with many more in home sections I believe. Not sure where the 1685 extra fans came from as our ends and side sections were clearly more populated than the Braintree sections. Anyway this could be the start of a run of results. 6pts off the playoffs is nothing at this stage of the season. Onwards and upwards.
