Post-Match Thread and Ratings Braintree Town 0-1 Southend United

How much of the improved defensive performance would you put down to Golding? I think in the last two games he’s led the line superbly, looked confident and accomplished on the ball. I think that makes a huge difference and I hope we can extend his loan.

The fact we scrapped the win and matched them despite not being able to pass it around for me was a positive, as we’ve not always been able to do that in away matches.
Golding replacing the hapless Crowther is why we look so much better at the back...he is quality in this League!

We won but if the result ended 1-1 we would all by questioning the substitutions. Luckily for us Braintree didn't offer lot in the final third.
But it didn’t end 1-1. I understand there are grounds to question the subs but it’s not fair to criticise Maher for something that didn’t actually happen, plus you might also say that if Pepple and Kendall were tiring we might have conceded if they had stayed on. But that didn’t happen either.

Quite a bit, Golding does look good. Wouldn't say he's been truly tested yet, but the writing was on the wall for Crowther after York although in fairness Crowther has been part of a defence that hasn't conceded many goals lately either.

The key thing for me is that Golding looks like he will allow us to play further up the pitch. For all the talk about the need for a creative midfielder etc, the fundamental issue that is stopping us scoring goals is we simply aren't controlling possession like we did last season. We don't spend enough time in the final third, and people like Bridge are having to play a lot deeper than we want them to. Golding looks comfortable bringing out the ball which, coupled with Kendall's work rate higher up the pitch, should enable us to keep possession better in the opposition half. This will be key to scoring more goals.

That'll be Phils "Clean Sheet Mentality"

Seems to still be in operation at Kidderminster with them having the 2nd tightest defense behind Scunthorpe shipping just the 17 goals

I don't have a problem with the idea of trying/working to keep a keen sheet - as long as it is the foundation of a team performance (and something to build on) rather than the overall objective.

It's not a "rule" for me but something I bear in mind & that is when your team is in the bottom third of the table then getting 3 points is the highest priority; around mid-table, the team should also, for me, be showing some promise before starting to think of the play-offs.

A wins a win, but it could have ended up quite differently after the substitutions.
Bonne lacks confidence, you can see he would rather pass than shoot and he avoids the penalty area, Pepples confidence is sky high, he shoots rather than pass and always looking to get into the box.
He needs to be told to shoot more, and look to get into the box all the time. That one on one was a great build up and unlucky shot.
If you only have one shot, your chances are less than whether you have 6 or 7.
We will need him scoring if Luton send a taxi for Bim!

We won so you are happy, look at the bigger picture and see how he operates
We have the most clean sheets this season, we haven't conceded in 6 out of the last 7.

The last 2 teams we conceded a goal against are 1st and 2nd in the league.

If you don't concede you can't lose, we are averaging 2 points a game which is promotion form.

Perhaps it's time to give Kev a bit of credit for the positives rather than looking at the negatives

Completely agree, a win is all that matters, points on the board.
We all love a good moan, but we also have the right to question some of the tactics.
If we win 5 or 6 of the next 7 and continue to shut up shop, more people will feel Maher is doing a good job.
We can but hope the upcoming results continue to show improvement.

I disagree about Bonne avoiding the penalty area. As someone said earlier he got into a great position and was shouting for the ball when Coker blazed over. He was going ballistic afterwards.

That was 1 time during his game last night, when confidence is low you don't do the things you normally should do, Pepple shoots virtually every time he gets the ball. Bonne seems scared to shoot, just in case he misses

I don’t disagree that he should shoot more and am desperate for one to go in to try and build the confidence and he certainly isn’t flying like Bim but that wasn’t the only time he got into the box and most of the time he was on he was coming deep to long balls trying to find JB and KAF.

In 2014/5, we only scored 54 goals over 46 games. Yet we still went up. I don't remember people complaining about the 10 (ten) 1-0 wins under Brown.
Oh we did- moaning about us dropping deep and inviting pressure. PB always said the players were never told to do it - but then they always did it and PB would on occasion take a forward off and bring on another CB…

And actually what should have happened is Bonne/Walker on a 5 mins later Braintree down to 10 men…

I do think he is so worried about missing the target he'd rather pass, but the drought is going on too long so a different approach is needed, soon someone will print up some t shirts with "I was there when Bonne scored"

Well done Ollie, you didn't score this time but stats show you were so much more likely to.
