Billy Paynter

Have you read this thread? Or just skimmed a few posts? Because we DON'T all agree that he is sh!t!

I still rate Paynter, and definately think he can do a job for us, quite a big job for that matter. His warm-up showed his potential on Saturday, some good strikes, but lacked confidence so decided to try and place it in the corner, until deciding to fire them in instead. I've always rated Paynter, and until he proves me wrong, I will continue to.

I think people are way too quick to jump on the players back at Southend, its disappointing really, and I'll probably get slated even for this.

But I know Paynter has a few horrific misses, looked totally stupid and struggled to impress, but for me, he has certainly shown potential. In fact I'm quite exited by the potential.

Let the slating begin.

Well said that man. I should think that whilst he was out injured he was ruing the day he ever signed for us after the appaling reception our "fans" gave him. He DOES have potential. Potential that made Hull sign him. He became out of favour at Hull and coming to us was the fresh start he needed, it just hasnt happened for him so far but it will with time and the fans need to realise that........

It doesn't help. Before Christmas, I remember Guttridge getting a tongue-lashing from a guy in South-upper.

"Guttridge, you're f-ing useless" etc

I've never seen a player look so dejected. He was having a poor game before that, but afterwards, he couldn't do anything right. I think most people on SZ game him 3 or 4/10 that day, but the crowd didn't help by getting on his back.

At the end of the day, we've signed players in their early 20s so Tilly / Ron are obviously playing the long game.

Paynter has looked poor so far, but the people who are slagging him off on this thread were calling for Clarke's head not so long ago.

I keep saying that I don't think he was brought in to the play the role that he has done so far. When we played him earlier in the season, Tilly had him alingside Freddy in a target man role, and I don't think that was correct. i think he was brought in not as a replacment for Freddy, but as an alternative, certainly, playing off of a target man with the ball at his feet. I was reading the Official PFA Footballer's Who's Who from a seasons ago today and looked him up. His first or second season at Port Vale, he had a really good goals to game ratio; actually scored quite a few. The desription of him had his a good player with the ball at his feet, quite skilful, quick and a good finisher, etc., but funnily enough, also mentioned that "his goals dried up when Vale lost target man Brett Angel to injury". This is evidence enough for me. I'll be waiting until I see him play in the role that he should be played in before I judge him properly.

To think that some of you lot on here actually call yourselves "supporters" - you ought to be f%cking ashamed of yourselves!! I shake my head in disbelief when I've trawled through this and seen the number of idiots slagging Billy off before he has had a proper chance to show us what he can do!

Billy Paynter has not been given a fair crack since he got here. A young lad, miles away from home, holed up in lodgings or a hotel trying to make a decent fist of a move to get more first team football. The fact that he could have sat on the bench or in the stands and earnt more at Hull speaks volumes to me. The guy wanted to come here, play football and earn his money.

Instead, he has played a handful of games alongside the footballing enigma that is Freddy Eastwood, (who quite frankly, must be the most difficult centre forward to strike a tandem with given the fact that only Sir Shaun Goater has been able to do it!!), found it difficult and hasn't impressed. The price tag wasn't of his making, that was agreed by Tilly and Hull City, yet people see this as a justification to slate the lad.

To these so called fans that have given him their "support". If that is the support you want to give him, booing each time he touches the ball I suggest you f%ck off elsewhere and support someone else - I hear Col U will have a nice shiny new stadium in a year or so that they'll never fill and they will only be too grateful for the extra bums on seats!!

One of my best mates is a Port Vale fan that lives in Southend and hates SUFC due to the battles we've had with them over the years. The day Paynter signed for Southend United, he was absoluely gutted, that a player he held in such esteem could join SUFC was unthinkable and showed the lack of ambition/money that Port Vale had and that SUFC were on the up. He still raves about some of the goals that he has seen Paynter score for Vale and swears he will come good for Southend United.

With this in mind, I'm giving the fella my utmost support. I just wish some of the other "fans" would do the same!!

Someone told me on Saturday that they had heard, and it was just someone I sit with and not my 'inside' person, that in training Paynter looks a great player, but as soon as soon as it comes to matchdays the fear of criticism affects him so much he can't show the ability he truly has. He actually becomes physically ill.

As I said I can't say this is true for definite as it's just someone in the stand but it fits IMHO.

Even more of a reason to support him when he plays.

I actually feel sorry for the guy, I really do.  Some of the criticism that he's received has been disgusting.  I hope and think that he'll eventually shove some peoples' words down their throats.  I just hope he'll get some inspirational motivation from T&B sometime soon, and show us that ability that he obviously harbours deeper down.

To be fair Gav.  Pay me, the generally agreed figure of, £2.5k a week & I'll even go to Col******r & play football!

I'm not a fan of Paynter but those of his fan club will be proved right.  He'll score shead loads of goals for us over the remainder of his contract after this season.  L1 & L2 will be a doddle for him! He's just not a Championship player, simple as. Not a bad player but out of his depth.

The worrying this though Hooly is that he was reported to be on a fair whack more at Hull City!!

I can't wait till Fossetts Farm. All the negative supporters that believe having a go at them makes them want to do well for the club crap, can be sitting far enough away from the pitch for the players not to hear him/her, or there will be enough noise generated that they will be unheard.

On a different subject, slightly, replying to RoyFox's comment...

I feel that slating someone and expecting them to improve is foolish, that is, if you do expect them to improve, or is it that you do not want them to improve at all?

I totally disagree that encouraging someone will not improve them. Players feed off confidence, especially strikers. Last time I checked Billy was classed as one. I think encouragement always improve people, otherwise people would go into special schools and start abusing them, coz thats gonna help isn't it Mr. Fox? No, instead they encourage them, and therefore get the best out of them. It's proven logic. It's common sense, or at least I'd hope so.

Blimey I wonder where some people get these figures from. Paynter is never on that sort of money. If only we could afford pay that sort of money a week to players!

I meant that it was foolish because of his lack of ability. If I encouraged a dead person enough do you think he would come back to life?

I appreciate you have a lot of confidence in your opinions, Roy, but you do realise that that is Dave Scriven, SUFC Media Manager, who is saying that King Billy isn't on that sort of wedge?

Of course not. Dead people can't hear you, you know Roy

But I'm prreetttyyy sure that Paynter is still alive. Oh and we haven't seen his ability yet have we Roy, one because you're brigade think its good to abuse new signings, so they can be shipped out on a free.

Do you not have any trust in Tilly? Surely Tilly see's his ability.

Oh and by the way, people have died and come back to life before if you didn't know.
