Billy Paynter

Quote[/b] (royfox @ Jan. 10 2007,18:18)]In my own way I like to think I'm trying to assist. I have asked if he was properly watched. I've said he cannot cut it at this level. You however, believe that just by encouraging him he will get better. I consider that foolish.
Tilson did more than just watch him. He worked with him for about 2-3 days solid when he was in The League under 21 squad last year. Does that answer your original question?

I can't wait till we sign a young striker who gets a few boos and then says, "I don't give a f%ck what those prats say, they know f%ck all about football. Most of them couldn't run for a bus. What a bunch of c%&ts". Here's hoping

Ok, well time will tell who is proved right and who is proved wrong. Sure I hope he does it for us, but from what I've seen so far he wont make it. I think I'm being realistic. Some people seem to think that just because he now plays for Southend we should all wear blinkers and pretend that our eyes are deceiving us. As we are at the bottom of the table and need a striker to partner Freddy I felt that some questions needed to be asked. Some people need a reality check in my opinion. Certainly Brushy thought so as he saw fit to slag off the reserve team himself.

Quote[/b] (Andy_S @ Jan. 10 2007,19:47)]Someone told me on Saturday that they had heard, and it was just someone I sit with and not my 'inside' person, that in training Paynter looks a great player, but as soon as soon as it comes to matchdays the fear of criticism affects him so much he can't show the ability he truly has. He actually becomes physically ill.

As I said I can't say this is true for definite as it's just someone in the stand but it fits IMHO.

Even more of a reason to support him when he plays.
How comes he even looked sh!t playing against col U youth team then? There was no pressure and we all sat in silence.
Surely you understand how important a role confidence plays for, particularly for a striker?

When you are low on confidence you are hesitant, you try not to make mistakes, you play conservatively and try not to take any risks. Faced with two options, you take the easy one, play it simple and knock it 5 yard backwards, rather than try the slightly riskier pass which - if it works - might create a goalscoring opportunity. To score goals you need to take risks, you need to gamble, but you need confidence to gamble. Paynter hasn't got that confidence, in fact very few of our team has that confidence, probably only McCormack (a new signing who got off to a great start) and maybe JCR in the last couple of games. Even Freddy's confidence is down, and his effectiveness is down as a result.

I, like some others, am prepared to hold back judgement on Paynter. I can see that he could have various attributes which could be utilised. I can also see that he also has deficiencies in his game, but I'd rather judge him over a prolonged period, give him a chance to slowly regain his confidence rather than trying to wreck his Southend career. Players who lack confidence and only play the easy ball won't ever look impressive until they regain their confidence. This is why Tilly has in the past talked a lot about trying to create an environment in which players aren't afraid to express themselves. We had that for our two promotion seasons, but we haven't that this season. If you can't see this then there is little point in continuing this thread.

this site is about discussion, if one believes he is poop, and another thinks he's great then so what, everyone have your say. Just because someone is negative that doesn't mean he's a crap supporter, I'd rather he say his piece on here than at the match.
My view is negative, I'm not saying he shouldn't play, but I think he should come on as a sub for a few games and try and show us what he is all about. We cannot play him for a full game untill he has shown something, like every one else in the team. I hope he does come good, but everyone says moving to a different place effects your game I'm not sure about that, playing football is the same north or south..

Ok, let's give him until the end of the season then - in the meantime we go down and next season we are watching League 1.
Christ we're running a professional football team not the Samaritans. If he doesn't have any ability - that's it - end of story.

Roy without wanting to start the whole thread again, that's your opinion and plenty disagree.

Yeah, but you lot were saying Clarke had no ability and now suddenly he's the messiah!

The fact is we're 6 to 1 ON to go down and Paynter has played in a handful of games.

He's not my first choice, but it's hardly going to be HIS fault if we play him and are relegated. To imply such a thing is ridiculous.

There seems to be a lot of people on here who think every player we get is going to be the finished article instantly.

What happened to us buying players and developing them with Tilly supposedly being able to get the most out of them ?

If we simply dropped every player that didnt start well and get rid of them how would players get better ?

JCR was apparently not good enough for us, he is now doing the business.

Clarke wasnt good enough, now doing the business.

Thank god Freddy scored a hatrick in his first game or he may not have played again if some supporters had their way

Plus lets not forget that the stick that Kevin Maher took when he first got here makes Paynter look like a fan favourite.
