Billy Paynter

Interesting to see that despite the fact that Liverpool were on the end of their worst thumping for 80 years, the fans never stopped singing or encouraging their players, and applauded them off at the end. An example to a few of our fans, I think.

If you all had your way we wouldnt be able to field a side with the "let's get rid" statements. I really hope Paynter sticks the criticism he gets up all your arses like JCR did on New Years Day.

Support Paynter, and support the team. He's only 22, and used properly (i.e. not a target man) he could prove to be a good player for this club. If you want to waste the 250K, sell him for nothing now, but if you want a good investment give him the best oppurtunity to repay us. If you dont, he wont. Simple as that.
Well done, now someone is talking sense! the only times we have seen him play, he has been paired with Eastwood and he has been used as a target man for Eastwood to play off of and that is not the role he is used to. He needs to play with a target man (i.e Harrold) so he can be given the freedom to run with the ball at his feet and create chances for himself rather than having the ball lumped up to him in the air. GIVE THE LAD A CHANCE!! if he is used properly then he shall come good.
Having seen him play a few times I would say not whilst I've got an hole in my arse, but more importantly we are bottom of the league and Freddy needs a decent strike partner like yesterday.

You have named me in your post, so can you please remind me which players I have ever criticised?

Many thanks.
Hammell? And I think Paynter in this thread. The other pair I named seem to do it more frequently.

Apologies if I've made a mistake in identity though.

I don't see what your problem is to be honest. If all you're going to do is slag the players off, is it really worth u being on here?! If tilly bought him, then he must have seen something in him to pay 200k for him and if Tilly thinks he is good enough, then that is good enough for me. So just put up or shut up!

Can you point out where I have criticised Paynter, or indeed any other player?

I have said certain things about Hammell, but have always acknowledged his attributes, ie, dead ball qualities and flair for attacking.

I do however accept your apology, if indeed after reading the above you still consider it valid?

Give Paynter a chance, I have seen glimpses of what he is capable. The boy looks a decent prospect but unfortunately his career with Southend could be over before it starts thanks to the Southend United boo-boys. Paynter works had for the team, brings other people into the game and has technical ability.

He will come good for us if the fans get behind him. Unfortunately, he is unsettled having moved half the country to join the team, signed for a big transfer fee, which straight away puts pressure on the lad to perform (Ala Clarke and Francis) and then picked up a hamstring injury at a bad time.

I'm 100% behind the boy, I just hope I'm not the only one.

I have made a mistake about your contribution to this thread, sorry. I retract my statement, as one criticism of one player is fair.

My apologies again.

Doesn't change the fact that he was hugely overpriced and doesn't have anywhere near the required standard of mobility, strength or touch for Championship football. Obviously it will be at a big loss financially but hopefully we can get someone to come in with £50-100k to take him off our books cos if what is rumoured is infact true and he's on £2,500p/w approx that makes him one of our top earners and that's definitely wages that could be spent on getting someone a lot more capable into the club.

In my own way I like to think I'm trying to assist. I have asked if he was properly watched. I've said he cannot cut it at this level. You however, believe that just by encouraging him he will get better. I consider that foolish.

I would never go to a game and ruck one of our players... god knows I been in enough arguments with fellow fans in the last forty years who seem to delight in picking on one player and accually enjoy seeing them have a mare..... but on here its different. This is an open forum for expressing opinions... and mine is Paynter is just not good enough for this level. I don't criticise his effort during a game and God knows its not his fault somebody saw fit to value his services at £200,000.

Of course he has been properly watched, tilson worked with him in the football league under 21's setup thing. How do you know he isnt cut out for this level. I think the lad still needs to be given a proper chance. He was bought a day before the start of the season and came down here and was put straight into the team before he had even got to know any of the other lads. They all had time to gel and he didnt and that was clearly obvious in that he was screaming for the ball throughout the match against Stoke and no one gave it to him! he hasnt had it easy, coming down from Hull, he must have been a bit unsettled and he was thrown in at the deep end.

well put, agree totally, and believe by the end of the season some of you will express a different opinion.

Paynter will by then have started to repay some of the money spent on him, when we show some faith and give him another chance.

According to the paper they booed the team of the pitch at the end of the game! I dont know becuase I didn't see it.

I think it's probably fair to say he was only in that as Taylor was his club manager and he was also going out with PT's daughter, I find it hard to imagine anyone else picking him for a FL U21 side as these teams contain the best squad the entire FL has to offer - Paynter shouldn't be anywhere near it!!

Read Scriv's post in an earlier page. Paynter is NOT going out with Peter Taylor's daughter.

I have to disagree there. Encouraging a player is NEVER foolish. In fact the most foolish thing, IMHO, is slagging off our own players during games. Football is as much a mind-game as a physical one, and we fans can and do make a hell of a difference to how our players perform. Sadly and all too often, it is a negative influence.

*sarcasm mode*

No!

I pay my money so I can slag of who I want!

If Paynter is over-priced that isn't his fault. If he's not very good thats not really his fault as such either. Slagging him off constantly is never going to help the situation.
