Relegated by Christmas is something we hear people say a lot... but I was just wondering... when was the last time that a team in modern English pro football actually got relegated by the time the season of good will to all men came a calling? I reckon never.

Ooh. Tricky / interesting question. When Derby were relegated from the Premier League on 29 March 2008, that was only the second time since the war that a side had been relegated before April. Darned if I can tell you who the other side was. Derby also had the lowest points total of any side since it became three points for a win, finishing the season with 11 points. The previous worst total was that of Loughborough Athletic, from 1899-1900 and of Donny Rovers from 1904-05, both of whom finished on 8 points (when it was 2 points for a win); however, neither side was technically relegated; instead, both failed to win re-election to the league.

So, I'm going to stick my neck out and say that no side has ever been technically relegated before the Ides of March. That said, in 2007-08, Paddy Power paid out on Derby getting relegated after only 5 games - i.e. in September 2007. Looks like they weren't wrong...

I would say that, barring a massive points deduction , it is impossible to be relegated by christmas . generally 50 ponts is the target (45 in the prem) and thats 15-18 wins, and at Christmas there are usually that many left to play.

So mathematically you can't be relegated at christmas

You can't base mathematical logic on the "general points target" !!

Mathematically, a team could not be relegated until after 29 games. But that would involve the unrealisatic scenario of no draws and all the top 20 teams having roughly the same number of points whereas the bottom four would have virtually none.

For £300k, I'd drive Kane there myself.

That would cover the players wages for about 3 months!

Before you urge our club any more to pick up the readies, I would refer you to a tweet by CP about an hour ago (don't think it's been mentioned on here). He says that, "Posh chair admits interest but says not £300K. Surprise, surprise, someone's telling porkies!!!!...........I wonder who?

Based on his track record, McAnthony! Total gobshite that fella.

If you read my post properly, you might notice the presence of the word 'potentially' just before the word 'promotion'.... But I'm confident that Posh will be relegated.

It's debatable whether 19 good games at this level constitutes 'proving himself'. He needs a full season to prove himself in L2 before even dreaming about trying to prove himself in Europe's best second tier.....

Ok so Posh maybe relegated and yes thats a real possibility.

Of course its debatle. There is no definition of 'proving yourself' at any level but id say a championship club bidding for a league 2 player suggests they think he has.

I still stand by comment that to think "....he'd be a fool to go" is incredibly biased. If it was the other way round we would say he would be a fool not to leave

The whole argument about whether or not Posh would be relegated is irrelevant. The important points are;

1 - We need the money

2 - He would earn more money and play at a higher level, whether he would learn as much from the coaches at Posh is debatable

3 - If he got some decent appearances under his belt and they did go down he may attract interest from other clubs, the best players always do

Peterborough can sod off. If I were Kane I'd be looking at a club with a better pedigree than theirs, someone with a few more Championship seasons under their belt.

best thing for kane is to get as many games for us now up to xmas or even a full season behind him and go from their, needs a better club than peterbro as they are the up and down club in league one and the championship.

i wouldnt of taken the rumoured 750k that west ham were supposed to be thinking about offering. I would keep him till the end of this year and then look for 1.5m at least for him

Never gonna happen. He's played 22 games and also out of position (supposedly). Never gonna get much more than the £300k rumoured.

I don't think £300k is that unreasonable a pricetag but I don't think I'd be inclined to sell him. If there's a budget in place to get us through the season then what does selling him achieve?

If there's not funding in place to get us through the season then that's a whole different story.

.

I wasn't I was using the "general points target" to indicate that you could accrue enough points to be safe after xmas regardless of how many you had before xmas

Agree with this. The chances of his value going up are much higher than it going down, if we can afford to keep him then not only will we probably increase our asset but will also have his playing ability on the pitch. If he was out of contract next year then that would be another matter, but he's not.

Good point, depends if the lad has his head screwed on. Actually, thats not really fair - if you have the chance of staying in League 2, or going up to the Championship, you'd have to think very long and hard about turning that down.

Whatever anyone thinks of Posh, they ARE bigger than us (at the mo) and have an ambitious chairman, building a new ground etc and better players than us. If they go down next year (which I dont think they will), then they have the resources to go back up.

If we go up, could we get straight into the Champ? Done it once, but I'd not bet my house on doing it again.

Peterborough claim that they have expressed interest in KF but have not tabled a bid. Probably ridiculous, but try this one for size. We need to bring some cash in, who would attract a good offer and plays in a position for which we already have cover? As Peterborough have shown interest we'll use them and claim that they have put in an offer for £300K. This puts KF in the shop window and announces that offers in excess of that sum would be considered...........let's wait and see if there are any takers. Total rubbish, I know. :winking:

Not sure about all that at all, don't under estimate Posh this season, I think Ferguson Jnr has learn't a lot in the last 2 years.

I also wonder why the old man hasn't loaned him a couple of Man Utd youngsters ? They obviously rate Kane very highly to be putting cash on the table for such an inexperienced player, I would have thought there are many Premierships youngsters going out on loan to Championship sides this season.

He certainly knows how to get a team into the bottom 3 of the Championship.

Tough one this yes we could do with the money and a lot of clubs know that so we should be cautious with any bids as clubs probably think we will bite their arms of for the dosh no matter what the bid.
However Kane is a promising player but we are ok/ well covered in the C-mid position i think he wouldnt be a definate starter for us so in my opinion we should hold out for a bigger bid and let him go.
I get the feeling although coming through the youth set up Kane doesnt have any loyalty to us and would be off in the future at the drop of the hat.
Let him go use the money to fund Rickets wages and hopefully have some left to pay a fee for a decent striker.
