Doyle is a strange one because he went to Bradford for a fee. Does that mean we tried to get him for a fee or did we miss out because we tried to get him on a loan?

Billericay have just signed Alfie potter from Mansfield, what a signing that is for them eh, played 35 games for Mansfield last season.

Wild rumour....

Seen on Twitter that a host of L1 clubs are after Kevin Van Veen - would he be the sort of player we could get?

Scored for Scunny against us if I remember correctly.

Yes - scored against us ....... and many other clubs. Is he still at Scunny? They (Scunthorpe) seemed to be building an ever improving club/squad (but still getting smallish crowds) ...... until it all seemed to go wrong. Anyone know why that was?

So just what do they have to do to change things? Is it simply the terms of the arrangement or persuading the player to move South? The latter might be more difficult.

Scunthorpe turned down a £4m bid from a Chinese side for him a couple of windows ago.

Think it was discovered after that no actual bid was made and it was his agent trying to drum up interest.

Did find that one a bit odd, why they would pay £4m for a league one striker who hasn’t exactly set the world alight.

To be fair to him, at that time he was playing really well. Scoring some fantastic goals. That's probably why the agent was drumming up interest, as at the time his stock would have been high.

Can't see us getting him this time though. Unless Northampton accept a loan with a view to a permanent. Even then, could we afford a fee?

That all sounds rather odd.

Van Veen looked good when I have seen him play ............. then he moves to Northampton (not exactly a move upwards I would have said) ............. and now he is playing in the division below .... and was an un-used sub on Saturday as Northampton lost to Lincoln.

Something doesn't quite add up there, does it?

At the time of his switch to Northampton he only had 5 months left on his contract plus Scunthorpe couldn't compete with the wages that Northampton were offering. Coupled with them receiving a transfer fee, it was a move that made sense for all parties.
I remember him playing alongside Paddy Madden for Scunthorpe against us a couple of years ago. He was excellent that day as they stuffed us out of sight.

At the risk of getting chased out of SZ with pitch forks, I'm a little underwhelmed by Chris Powell's off-season transfer results. Reading between the lines, I don't see him having as much pull with some of the bigger fish like, dare I say it, Phil Brown did. That's not to say he wont be better and bringing the best out of the players he does acquire, but I'm getting a sense that he is not as successful in landing the transfers. By his own admission, he has missed out on numerous targets throughout the summer and we are left with the following to date:

Mantom - Already with us, seems decent, although only technically a summer signing as was with us for several games at the tail-end of last season
Hyam - Very suspect on injuries and discipline. I live in Ipswich and most ITFC fans have said he is a gamble even at L1 standard
Lennon - Looks very uneasy at the back
Barratt - Non-League find, always a gamble
Hopper - Another "gamble" signing, might pay off, might be behind Ba in selection come next May
Dieng - Possibly the better prospect of the summer transfer activity, but not really seen much of him

Sure, financials lay in the hands of RM, but I can't help but feel we've not made the most of the transfer window and last Saturday's result is probably a signal that we've not got the players to challenge beyond mid-table.
