The maths don't work well. If we paid £100,000 and sold him for £200,000 then we would have to give Spurs £80,000. so after expenses we would hardly make anything on a player who has doubled in value.

I believe the sell on clause was for the percentage of any future transfer above the figure that he was original bought for, so in fact it is different to what you have quoted. If I am wrong I stand corrected.
Also clubs often attach a sell on clause in return for a lower initial fee, which may of occurred in this instance.
Surely we shouldn't be looking at a future signing being sold even before he has signed. Rotherham have signed a very good player and I am sure we would of accepted such a clause to enable us to sign him.
