Films you've watched recently.

I think the reason was to be able to sell the films in the States, for example there was a tie up between Exclusive (later better known as Hammer) Films and the independent American producer and owner of a chain of cinemas, Robert Lippert. This resulted in a lot of faded or never quite made it names like George Brent, Alex Nicol, John Ireland, Lloyd Bridges, Barbara Payton etc being brought in as headliners for the US market. There is an excellent book titled 'The British B film' by Steve Chibnall and Brian McFarlane which I have found indispensable.
Thanks a lot---Another American actor (who I do like is Dan Duryea)--I have that very book--I must get it down from the shelf.

Got round to watching the new Bridget Jones last night. Certainly not what I was expecting but a good watch. An honest look at the journey of life.

Saw a very average Western on France's Arte channel last night The Quick & the Dead with Gene Hackman &Sharon Stone + the excellent The Scent of a Woman on BBC2 .Probably Al Pacino's last great film.

The Alto Knights. A mafia film about Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, with VGs quest for power. No wonder it's a box office flop. A dreadful film, from someone that loves these mafia films. It's hard to get your head around the main two characters, as they are both played by Robert De Niro. A massive mistake, as they look and sound the same. Secondly, when most of this happened they were in their 50s, but this film has them both looking and moving like a 70-80 year old. De Niro is 81 after all. The two main characters are played with no charisma, no sense of humour, and are both very boring. Not much happens in the film at all. They try to make the most out of the Apalachin meeting, but even that disappoints. Most of the film is VG going on about, and slagging off Costello, and Costello not wanting a war, and trying to retire in peace. I was so looking forward to this film. The next mafia film can only be better.

I would have walked out long before the end!
