This is what really worries me, the number of players that we have out of contract this year. Some of these are/have been key players. Who, of these, are really going to be at all interested in discussing any contract extensions as things stand?

GK:
Ted Smith - 2018
Mark Oxley - 2018

DEF:
Ben Coker - 2018 (option 2019)
Jason Demetrious - 2018

Luke O'Neill - 2017
John White - 2017
Anton Ferdinand - 2017

Harry Kyprianou - 2017
Jordan Williams - 2017
Dan Matsuzaka - 2017

Michael Timlin - 2017 (option 2018)

Jason Williams - 2017
Nile Ranger - 2017 (option 2018)

Yeah, it's almost as if Brown gives the square root of two ***** about the squad status one season to the next, because by then it's hoped he'll be off.

Honestly, we have to be one of the most glaring examples of how a director of football model would be beneficial in the English game.

"Numbers through the gates have already dropped"..... I have to smile.. :-)

Did you really expect an increase on our home attendance against a team that brings less than 100 themselves on a bank holiday weekend??? A period when many would be away.....

I like your optimism, the only way is up then?

I think people are overreacting on here as always. I accept that:

- we've just had had the worst run in our history.
- been made to look like utter mugs by Gillingham twice in four days.
- just witnessed possibly the most inept display in memory.

However are things really as bad as people on here are expressing. Oh....they are....

I'll get my coat.

There's a far bigger issue than the football im afraid. Its the charlatan of a chairman. If there are any protests to be had it should be aimed at him.
We have no long term 'success' however that is gauged with him at the helm. If there is one club that would thrive and prosper with that addition of a new stadium coupled with the absolute need for o e then its our beloved club. This man can not sell a plot of valuable land....design a building then build it on another plot of land?????? He's supposdd to be a property developer. **** the football its what is going on elsewhere that bothers me.

And our only true asset (Leonard) is out of contract in the summer!!!! :stunned:

I remember years ago someone told me, protest against the manager and nothing happens. Protest against the chairman and the manager gets sacked

What if we beat Bolton and Scunthorpe?

Then what? Would be a bit fruitless protesting after 2 back-to-back wins. Not that I see it happening a I don't think we've ever won at Glanford Park?

Your correct, we've never beaten the Iron at Glanford Park, our last win on their turf was at the "old showground" way back in 1983, but what a win it was (6-1)!! .... No chance of sadly replicating that though, as we currently haven't scored that many in all competitions so far, let alone in a single game.

Oh, I don't know.

That win came after a run of 3 wins in 24 games!

And this of course is the root cause of all the problems. We can never compete at a level a club of our size should with him in control. Every year he is killing us slowly with increasing debt.

Promotion was built largely on sturrocks players, youths and a good signing in Coker. He does seem to have signed a couple of decent players this year, but he also signed a winger and prefers playing his third choice right back in that position...

With a small squad and deadline day on Wednesday, we would need a new manager with a realistic shopping list in by Monday OR brown will need to be given another 3 or 4 matches. I hope for the former.

coker AND white.
and Bolger.
and Atkinson.
and Ryan Leonard moving into midfield.
and Dan Bentley becoming the number 1.
All Brown actions.

PB probably doesn't have much longer than September to turn things around. Start of this season a shambles but who's to blame??? Don't think Brown will be envying his trip to Bolton next Saturday unless he has far more options. VERY important week coming up.

I highly doubt he'll have too many more away trips to worry about after Saturday.....

The only one that REALLY worries me there Kay is Leonard in truth. I would say Wordsworth too but he's been injured so much that he may not be offered a new deal anyway unless he pulls his finger out. Granted Leonard is a BIG worry but we have options on other key players as you correctly stated - players like Ranger & Timlin (who also needs to get himself fit to stay here). We don't know how successful Ferdinand will be yet so I'm going to take him out of the equation. I would like Sokolik to be given an extension, I can't quite fathom why he's been dropped as when he came into the side he looked our best CB. Would I be concerned by the possible departures of Thompson, Barrett, O'Neill, White, Atkinson, Mooney and Jason Williams? Not particularly, in fact it may well be a good thing to get rid of a lot of the deadwood. Obviously it would be a big rebuild but that could work in our favour long-term. I'd be more concerned with losing the youngsters like Nico Cotton, Rene Batlokwa and Dan Matsuzaka however I don't believe they would leave as a mass clearout would give them more of an opportunity to get into the first team here.

It's worth saying again though, Leonard is a BIG worry and if I was Ron Martin I'd be desperately banging on Lenny's agents' door now.

Isn't that Brian Horton's official job title? Not sure that bringing your mate in really counts though...

Powell hasn't done anything as manager
austin? Yeah get stone Cold in. Dean? What on earth has he done to get a managers job anywhere?
Cotterill .Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

What had Tilly done to get a manager's job anywhere?

You have to give Brown some credit for the improvements at B&L too. Think of the awful state it was over there and how much better it is now. They're also fitter now than they were, though you wouldn't have thought so today.

Great. So we've basically got Sarah ****ing Beeny MKII managing our club paired with an excercise bike.

I'm not twisting what 'people' are saying. Whoever 'people' are. I'm just pointing out the current situation that is there for all to see i.e. club is cash strapped, injuries to key players, small squad, reduction in quality (i.e. Bentley vs. Oxley).

I am of the view that as a result of the above we are going to seriously struggle this season unless they are addressed quickly and that a change of manager is not going to better facilitate that. In fact it is my opinion that the team is so poor at the moment (having to play the likes of Barrett, Williams, Bridge, O'Neill (as a winger) and the boy from Swansea being evidence of that) PB may well be getting the best out of what he has at his disposal!

Is anyone seriously saying that sacking PB and bringing in AN Other (who by definition has probably failed somewhere else - most out of work managers have) is going to be the catalyst for turning our season around - and in the short term getting players such as those I have listed above playing 40-50% better? I think at this stage what you get from those players is where they are in their careers - either at the beginning or the end and that they are frankly out of their depth in League 1 (albeit for different reasons.) None of them would be playing (some wouldn't even make the subs bench) if PB had all his players available - and yet four of those five were in the First XI yesterday afternoon.

PB does talk a load of nonsense sometimes and can be terribly self-absorbed - HOWEVER on judging him and the team I do not think he is being unfair asking the fans to keep their powder dry for a little while yet. We aren't even in September.

If Brown planned around Ranger being available all this season then he deserves the sack. This is his squad and his allocation of wages. It was his decision to sign a 4th right-back as our big close season signing.

I want to sack Brown and bring in a manager with the long term plan that Brown so clearly lacks. And I'd have made that decision end of last season, so it's not just that awful start.

You can't give any credit to PB regarding Ryan Leonard moving into midfield. Although he played at full back before arriving here, Sturrock (who knew Lenny as a youth at Plymouth) never saw him as that when bringing him to us. He always saw and played him as an attacking midfielder and Ryan convinced him he was right by scoring a couple of goals in a pre-season trial. From then on, when fit that was his regular role under Paul S, who always had Barker and Clohessey as his first choice full backs. Lenny also scored a vital goal in the semi's which got us our first Wembley final which unfortunately for him, he was not involved in.

Isn't that Brian Horton's official job title? Not sure that bringing your mate in really counts though...

Precisely. If you look at the Lyon model, the Director of Football is hired by the chairman/chief executive as far more of a long-term appointment than any manager/head coach, and is completely independent. This allows the club to adopt and follow a transfer policy that prevents them wasting money on players only ever desired by the manager/head coach, and any bias towards nationalities/agents/ages etc.

If you think how much resource we've wasted in the last decade - and we've been relatively lucky with just the three managerial appointments - but each of those managers has brought in their own players, and Brown in particular has been a mess in the market. The squad Brown has assembled also has very little certainty over it, players are old and contracts winding down. If Brown leaves at the /before the end of the season, we will again be tasked with a complete restructure.

Having a wholly independent DoF who solely acts on the good of the club would prevent that.

And, as you say, it would appear Horton's not so much a DoF as he is Brown's pal who he trusts for a second opinion, gets paid for it, and will be off as soon as Brown is.
