Brett Angle
First XI
I'm not close enough to the club to know who is responsible (Brown/Martin) but the stark reality is the current squad is inferior (in terms of both quality and quantity) to the squad that finished in a play off position in L2. I'm not sure that too many people on here would disagree with that. So I guess how the hell does anybody expect that we should be beating all before us in L1? Added to the fact we've lost (and not satisfactorily replaced) the quality of the likes of Bentley, Payne, Worrall and Corr we have a former inspirational club captain and legend who, with the best will in the world, is now past his sell by date (for this level of competition anyway.)
True there have been a few signings who will need time and in Simon Cox a top striker imo who, once we can provide him with the right kind of service, will score goals. There is clearly bags of potential with Nile Ranger (if we can keep him fit and motivated) and ditto the signing of Ferdinand yesterday that could prove a real coup. We have never seen the best of Wordsworth and again if he can get himself on the pitch (regularly) as well as Timlin, the midfield has an immediate and altogether more experienced look about it. All of a sudden players like Coker, Demetriou and Leonard will look like the players we know they are if all these other guys are available, believe me.
True, this may all only add up to mid-table at best unless the club bring in another proven striker (hopefully Simpson) and somebody imo of the likes of Peter Butler or Keith Jones who can own the midfield. But if that does happen in conjunction with getting everyone fit I do firmly believe it could still be a successful season. I don't think a change of manager makes any sense on any level until you first resolve all/many of the issues above and then re-appraise the situation after 8-10 games.
