Post-Match Thread and Ratings Wolves 2-1 Southend United AET

Firstly to those Southend fans who reacted to the loud mouth Wolves fans after the game behind the Steve Bull stand, move away young men, you are ambassadors of your club!!

First things first, thought our support last night was brilliant. Don't know how many made it, probably about 300? Had a really good laugh.

Very good application from every player, didn't deserve to lose it the way we did so all can hold their heads up high this morning.

Morris 7
Clohessy 6
Gilbert 6
Bilel 7
Barker 7
Simpson 7
Easton 6
Grant 8 - brilliant again!
Zaboub 3
Corr 6
Sturrock 6

Subs

Hall 5
Soares 5
Paterson 6

Thought everyone put in a shift. Soares and Simpson both missed very good chances to win the game.

Definitly didn't deserve to lose. Such a bast*rd to concede with virtually the last kick of the game. For long periods of time I thought we bossed Wolves. Great team performance, the effort was outstanding.

Can't be arsed with ratings, as everyone run their plums off. Got to mention a few tho; thought Simpson was immense, and showed was the main driving force. IMO he HAS to play int he centre though, as he's not a winger. He could potentially be that missing spark that we need. Also thought Corr lead the line well, but Sturrock, despite running himself into the ground, was pretty ineffective IMO. The problem with playing both Corr and Sturrock, is that it just doesn't look like a scoring partnership, and you can't win games unless you score goals. Granty did himself proud.

Then onto Bilel Mohsni. What a debut. It's only early days but it seems obvious this kid has got something special about him. Good in the air, has bags of pace and knows how to tackle. For my mind there are about 4 players who's name are joint first on the team sheet, and this kid is now one of them.

On another day the scoreline could have been mental. We had a goal ruled out, (can anyone clear up what happened with Mohsni's first attempt? I thought it went in, but can't remember) they had two goals ruled out, we hit the bar, thy hit the post, Morris made some excellent saves and Hennesy made some great saves. All in all, a brilliant, entertaining game that I'm glad I went to.

Mohsni's first attempt went wide - although he was a yard offside but the Lino somehow didn't spot it. He did correctly flag offside later on for the ball Mohsni did put in the net.

For some reason I thought it went in? Guess it's 'cos i'd already started celebrating

Good stuff... Looking forward to Friday even more now. Good to hear that the lads are staying up until Friday for some team bonding as well.

Just woken up! A well deserved lie in i tell you! Got home about 145am and losing in the 122nd minute was oh so cruel! Thought the back 5 were outstanding last night and Barker really impressed me at centre half, despite giving the penalty away. The fullbacks were good, but really like the look of Clohessy! Morris was good between the sticks once again but then we move onto Bilel! What a superb debut! The guy is going to turn into an absolute legend and on the back of last night, that was probably our best back 4 performance so far this season. Going forward we still look a little light and i think we perhaps miss the creative spark, rather than perhaps an out-and-out goalscorer but getting one of each in would be nice.

Superb trip and penalties would have been deserved but those are the knocks the players are gunna have to get used to.

So, we now have a conundrum in team selection and not, surprisingly, over Blair Sturrock..........just what is it with Zaaboub? I still don't see why he keeps getting the nod over other players who seem to always perform well enough when they've come on, and also why oh why is not Barry Corr being used alongside Paterson or Spencer?

I think the poster who reckoned that was Clohessy's only decent performance for us was rather harsh, Clohessy has been ok up to now, nothing stand out but fairly solid. Interesting that Gilbert played his debut over the full 120. Those of you who were seeing Moshni for the first time now see why others of us have enthused about him!

Replacing someone as good as Simon Francis has a lot to do with it.
I personally thought he is a defending right back who can get forward as well.
The good thing is, that he actually defends first before attacks, he has got a descent cross, don't forget that he has been picked out of non league, and he doesn't look out of place at all.

SEAN AARON CLOHESSY OOOHHH AHHHH, I WANNA NOOOOOOOOWAAAHHOOOO (something something something)!

Yes, I think you're probably right. Clohessy seems to be more defensive with the occasional foray forward whereas we all know what Francis was like, for me, the only negative about Clohessy is his seeming reticence to tackle. Get that sorted and we'd have a very good young right back.

Well well isnt it funny how football and in particular southend united can go full circle in a matter of days.

After the horror show that was the port vale last saturday i left roots hall feeling despondant angry and quite sad, but in contrast i left wolverhampton last night angry and sad but that we didnt get the win that i thought we deserved, but also proud that a team to which i am connected to do put in a great performance.

Ok so wolves will claim that we played there reserves and kids , but there were first teamers and fringe players a plenty in the line up and such was mccarthys worry that he brought on ebanks blake and doyle in an attempt to try and end the tie quickly.

Southend lined up with simspon bilel and gilbert in the side and right from the off you could see that sturrock had demanded effort and the back line of gilber barker bilel and clohessy looked a much solid bank of 4 than those that collapsed just 3 days earlier at the hall.

In a midfield that looked certainly a harder one to break down , but lacks natural width with only a woefully unfit and dare i say it uninterested zaboub out wide.

We neednt have worried ofcourse such was the tenacity of the boys in the middle with grant providing all the bite and looking to refreshingly find feet with each pass and easton offering and avenue in which to move the ball. Simpson for me is the most gifted in possesion we have in the midfield and had a very good game and was involved in all the build up to each attack and is exactly what we need in the center of midfield not out wide.

Upfront we persisted with the blunt but willing strikeforce of sturrock and corr. I will not be too critical of either as there commitment is not in question , but there ability to work in tandem and create chances however is one that should be called into question.

The game itself was quite an entertaining one with southend starting brightly and looking to make the most of playing in decent stadium against higher league opposition and although chances were at a premium throughout it look like blues who would make the most of the opportunity.

It wasnt to take wolves long though the ball went out wide to there young foward who was up against the immaculate bilel, but unfortunately he slipped whilst making a tackle and the ball was in the area with relatively little pressure someone and i think it was clohessy dived in recklessly and conceded a penalty.

Its a learning curve. Southend gifted port vale a whost of chances on saturday which were not taken , but at the highest level mistakes are always punished.

Southend continued to build with bilel coming up for every set peice and missing a very good chance and scoring another only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Wolves had a goal of there own dissallowed when a shot from distance left morris stranded as it cam back of the bar and although the follow up was dispatched with applomb it was flagged for offside.

On to the second half and southend again started brightly and such was the level of blues play that both kevin doyle and ebanks blake were both were introduced to play and both it has to be said looked threatening with ebanks blake showing a lot of pace and strength.

Blues though were making plenty of gains of there own though and having beaten the offiside trap corr had a shot that beat the wolves keeper but unfortunately smashed the bar .

But blues efforts werent in vain and with plenty of balls having already been pumped into the box southend found space out wide and the ball was crossed low and across the 6 yard box and with wolves keeper in no mans land there was easton with a powerful header in the bottom corner.

So on to extra time and by this time a lack of fitness was begining to show and wolves were starting to get on top , but hall who had replaced the very innafective zaboub was looking a very good outlet on the counter attack.

Ebanks blake was causing havoc and had an effort ruled out havng tap in on the goal line for offised another was ruled out just moments later.

With 17 minutes of second half extra time already been played wolves made a final foray and found space out wide right and the ball was thumped across goal. Morris got a pal on it but with so many wolves players in there the inevitable happened and southend were out of the cup with what turned out to be the last kick of the game.

I left wolverhampton last night a happy man. Dont get me wrong i would have prefered to be in the hat for the next round but blues gave a great account of themselves and seemed to click with the level of effort and skill and it has to be said that some of the play was a very good standard and hoof ball was far removed!

It was a bit of bast@rd of a drive home and eventually got in just after 2am, but it was a worthwhile foray into the black country.

Ratings for pringello:

Morris 7 Another decent performance

Gilbert 7 Looks like a left back , but fitness is key and i doubt he will play friday after that many minutes

Barker 8 Looks much better in the centre and so it has to be said do we

Bilel 9 MOM . This boy has the potential to be one of the best centre backs we have ever had. He is the ultimate rough diamond. Get a longer contract dran up asap. In a negative he did contribute to wolves first goal by slipping but he will get better and better and has to start from now on.

Clohessy 7 Got foward more than of late and deleivered decent balls whe he did , but im sure it was him that dived in to concede a penalty.

Zaboub 5 Looks so unfit and so un-interested and was rightly subbed

Grant 8 Worked himself into the ground and bombed foward at every opportunity and cut out so many wolves attacks

Easton 7 Worked hard and kept it simple and scored a great equaliser

Simpson 8.5 The pick of the midfield. Im sure he would like to start in the middle but seems content out wide. So comfortable on the ball and oozes quality travelling with and releasing it.

Corr 6.5 Worked very hard but ultimately created little

Sturrock 6.5 As above , but im not sure if it was sturrock or corr that hit the bar but im sure it was sturrock

Subs :

Hall 7 looked very lively and eager and provided a great oulet in the latter stages. Please give this boy a start

Paterson 7 Became involved and look to make the runs to releive the pressure

Im sure someone else came on possibly soares but did little of note

I think we have fibally found a decent back four and a midfield that seems to work, but we need hall to get a game and a new striker is a must !

McCarthy's Views.

"We had to work hard for it and probably didn't deserve it," he said.

"And they didn't deserve to lose the game in that cruel way.

"Southend were different class and deserved at least to go to penalties but I'm glad it didn't and delighted we got through.

"It proves that players who are not playing regularly at a competitive level need games and one or two were flagging a bit at the end.

Very impressed with the team last night and if we play like that in the league we'll soon be picking up wins.

Morris - 7.5 Faultless, good command of box. Puts it in the right place for Corr to win headers rather than just punting the ball.
Clohessy - 7 Like the look of him and Simpson on the right hand side. Simpson isn't an out and out winger, and Clohessy can overlap and whip crosses in.
Gilbert - 7 Solid debut. Was more exposed on this side as Zaaboub/Hall didn't protect in the same way as Simpson and cost us dearly at the end.
Bilel - 7.5 Bad bad start, falling over nearly letting them in, and then at fault for 1st goal. After this was brilliant, won every header, every tackle including some last ditch tackles. Showed great character to bounce back and is a real find.
Barker 7 - Well organised and reads the game well. Could form a good partnership with Mohsni.
Simpson - 8 Very impressive last night. Thought he did ok against Aldershot as well. Him Grant and Easton could form a good midfield unit.
Easton - 7 Good workrate and allowed Grant to bomb forward and press Wolves.
Grant - 7.5 Looked like he'd cope playing at a higher level no problem
Zaboub - 5 Not convinced.
Corr - 7 I like Corr. Good in the air, holds it up, works hard. Need to find his partner and get them playing together regular.
Sturrock- 6 Did alright and the game plan worked. Not sure him and Corr works though and Corr is the better player IMO.

Hall - 5 Bit lightweight and don't get the impression he's giving his all yet. Need to see a bit more to form an opinion.
Soares - 7 Was quite impressed when he came on up front. maybe him and Corr could work.
Paterson - 5 Didn't really get into the game much.

Would like to see same line-up with maybe Zaaboub and Sturrock being replaced by 2 of Paterson/Soares/Spencer

Apart from this statement it was a really good read.
It wasn't a horror show, we lost to the favourites to win the league!

UTB!

To be fair dave it was a horrible showing. No commitment quality and outplayed from start to finish and it should have been 5 or 6-1 such was the level of dominance from port vale. I dont know what it would need to be to be deemed a horror show by you!

Dave, come on mate. That performance on Saturday was ****ing shocking and not acceptable.

It's Moussa all over again isn't it?

Zaaboub is clearly the only player we've got with any class (hey, we're in division 4, that goes with the territory). Actually that's probably a bit harsh on Simpson, who has some class. But the rest of them are clearly functional in their passing lacking the technique and vision to deliver weighted, intelligent passes onto a player's correct foot.

Zaaboub's rusty as hell, clearly lacking match fitness (which is why he played and why his performances tail off) but you can see in occasional glimpses that he has that sort of quality. It might not always come off, but he's the one player who can inject quality into the team. He's following in the footsteps of two other criminally underappreciated talents, Moussa and Gower and I feel sorry for those who failed to appreciate what they brought to the team.

There wasn't much I could take from the Port Vale game, but our two best moves were both down to Zaaboub. One of them saw Zaaboub break from his own penalty area, beat an opponent or two and have the presence of mind to still deliver a good 40 yard ball to Clohessy to switch the focus of attack to the area where there was space. The other saw him link up with Barker, where his intelligent movement created space for Barker to overlap and he then pick him out with a simple, properly weighted ball which allowed Barker to collect the ball without breaking stride and put in a dangerous cross. It may have looked easy, but it's a skill to make it look easy and was down to his appreciation of angles and his initial movement inside, which both opened up the pass to him and created the space for Barker.

I appreciate the headless chickens as much as the next man, but I like to see it balanced with some guile. Zaaboub has that, if not yet fitness. I can't wait for him to be fit.

Sturrock himself pretty much said it was.

All fair enough.

Although I would consider the whole of last season as one. That was a horror show. Losing to Port Vale isn't in my book!

Thank god you said that about Zaaboub!! Thats exactly how i see him too - and I was about to put my "11 Zaaboub" shirt on eBay, but you've given me a second wind of hope for the big guy!

The Zaaboub appreciation group starts here!

At last, I can update my sig.
