Courtney? That hideous WOMAN was never in Nirvana. I take it you mean Krist!

Listen to Murmur, early years REM. It's brilliant stuff - alternatively there's a compilation of their stuff from the IRS years, every track a winner. As for Oasis, DM & WTSMG are indeed superb - unfortunately after that (for me and many others) they went a bit (a lot) ****.

No I did mean Courtney, maybe should have put her separately from Nirvana but I love Hole as well so her musical opinion/influences are something I'd give a chance. I haven't heard Krist say he is an REM fan so I didn't mention him. Hmm I might try again but I don't think i'll warm to Stipes voice. The 1st 2 Oasis albums being great and the rest mediocre seems a popular opinion but I like songs from all the albums and don't believe the truth is a great album too IMO.

I've really tried to give REM a chance, I've always been a massive Nirvana fan and the way Kurt, Dave and Courtney idolise them made me want to like them, I just can't though. Can't stand Stipe's voice and they just seem dreary to me so I'm with Barna on this one. I also agree with Barna on Coldplay although they have made one or two decent songs, however I can not agree with Oasis, for me they are one of the best bands there has ever been.

I love REM pre Out Of Time.

A lot of the stuff after and including Out Of Time was a bit ****.
Yep, some of it was, but Murmer to Green is impeccable, and plenty from Out of Time onwards is great. The post-Berry years might be a bit lean, but 'Up' was a fantastic record from start to finish. I'd go so far as to say that for me, REM are second only to Fugazi as the greatest US guitar band of the last 40 years.

The whole Alt-American movement of the early 80s-early 90s brought us some fantastic bands - REM, 10000 Maniacs, B52s etc. Your loss Barna if you can't appreciate them. :raspberry:

Not really. That's about the time I got into Blues,Jazz and Country music in a serious way.

Talking about alt.country bands, I've always liked Lambchop and The Jayhawks-just not the more commercial bands you mention.

2 out of 3's not bad.:thumbsup:I'd even grant you that Oasis made some catchy tunes.

Ok, can't knock you for that, but pre-Out Of Time REM, 10000 Maniacs and even the B52s were hardly commercial.

Indeed - I love how REM retained their edge, even at a time when they were happy to be really pop-y as well. They found a way to straddle alt and mainstream and never sold out, even when selling millions of records.

Let's not forget though, that there's nothing wrong with commercial music per se. I'm not alone in thinking that The Beatles are the greatest band of all time, and I do believe they were slightly commercial. And on the flipside, plenty of non commercial music is utter garbage.

Oh absolutely agree 100% The knee jerk reaction that all modern pop is dross is tired and lazy - there are a few gems in there. Sometimes I listen to 6 Music and think, what a load of ****. There's one they keep playing recently with the music all "wobbly"...the DJs rave about it but **** me, it's awful.

British Gas, absolute *****. Phone up to complain about the 2 month wait for my smart meters to be sorted to then get hung up on when I asked to speak to a manager.

Switch to Sainsbury's. According to Martin Lewis it's the same company with a different name - and cheaper.
