Luton Airport. Rubbish, isn't it?
I would rather have to clear sheep from a field and hang off the wing than fly from that dump.
It's our local airport so we'll use it nine times out of ten but dear me. Maybe once the renovations are done it'll be ok, but in the meantime it is a shocker.
Edinburgh on the other hand -
Not only is it a shocker of a place, they're money grabbing *******s as well. They charge for just about everything you can think of, including access to the drop off area for taxis.
Not that this would affect many people, but this is a true story of something that happened not all that long ago. A light aircraft took off from Elstree, and heard a bang whilst retracting its gear. The pilot therefore diverted to Northolt, but was told they weren't able to help. Northolt suggested he go to Luton. The pilot did. ATC at Luton asked him to do a low level pass so that they could inspect his gear. He did. They said they couldn't see anything wrong but suggested that he land anyway as a precaution, which he did. Luton then charged him a £1047 landing fee!
There is a thing in the UK called the Strasser Scheme (named after Charles Strasser) that allows all pilots to land anywhere free of charge in an emergency. There are only 4 airports that are not signed up, Luton being one of them. However, it was Luton that suggested to him that he land just in case, and they still ripped him off.
Why couldn't he land back at Elstree?
Good question. I'm not entirely sure, but there was a good reason...I'm not sure how long after he left Elstree that this happened.
Was he not allowed in Northolt because of their VIP status.
Luton would do its utmost to assist any pilot in distress and would never disadvantage a GA pilot financially
I don't think that would be the reason. Northolt is a member of the Strasser Scheme. All the original story says is that Northolt were unable to take them (it could be any number of reasons) but the suggested he declare an emergency and go to Luton.
The original story also has an earlier quote from the MD of Luton as to why they haven't signed up:
Whatever that is?.
They certainly always used to use Northolt for the VIP flights. Royal family, PM, etc and certain visitors to Britain. Some days it was off limits.
It was a very high priority target for the Russians back in the cold war days.

"Sugar in the coffee"
"No thanks"
Guess what.
House buying.....so get the basic contract yesterday, and flicking through it mentions "has any electrical work been carried out in the last 5 years"...vendor ticks "no".
I've just got a report from the electricians I sent round to test it all, and they report back that there's been work done that looks less than a year old...and it's been done unprofessionally, illegally and without the proper certification......happy ****ing days....
Oh dear, that was a quick "find"; what else is "lurking" in the bodged DIY arena?

Probably a fridge that has been forced into a narrow space and secured with no more nails
