He is not leaving Barnet. Even if they don't go under why would he leave to join us?Dean Brennan would be a good shout if Barnet don't go up.
Any manager who has done very well previously and recently in this league.
Someone who is likeable and can motivate a team to get the maximum out of them and more importantly an attack minded manager who looks to out score teams, rather than just try to avoid defeat.
Tactics have played a crucial role this season. Some of Southend's best performances this season have been when they opted for a more attacking line-up and Kevin Maher only opts for that formation after a run of poor results.Maybe kevin will keep his job until the end of the season We wont go into the playoffs And we wont go down either .Things are in a stalemate We need a total rebuild from top to bottom And i dont mean the ground .Kevin and his team did a great job last season. But things have moved on and our team has not .We have no punch up frount .We need a proven goal scorer Hopper Bonn and walker are just not goal scores in the 20 goals a season men .We had two of them in cards and bim but they have gone and we need to replace that goal scoreing men .At the moment we havent .
Codswallop! By that logic, we should have all blindly supported Alvin Martin, Kevin Bond and Sol Campbell too?! I’ll call out underachievement as I see fit thanks. Not the season we’d hoped for but keep the faith.
Support the team. Support the management.
That’s what we signed up for.
Exactly this. Time and time again gets it wrong and it's all very obvious basic stuff visible for the many to see. Giving him another season isn't going to make him aware of those things.Defeats aren’t the problem, it’s the manor of the defeats, the terrible tactics, poor substitutions, the lack of accountability and his readiness to turn on the fans.
I could handle losing if we had a go, attacked and entertained a bit, at least I’d have faith that if the correct players were signed we’d improve. Under Maher we could sign Halaand and he’d never score as we don’t create decent chances.
Pay him all the 3 amigos salaries .. manage a much bigger club.. offer him a a decent transfer budgetHe is not leaving Barnet. Even if they don't go under why would he leave to join us?
Thanks for your thought provoking response, Rayleigh Dan, it made me reflect. I was trying to suggest we support a management team that have talent and have demonstrated loyalty to our club and us fans since October 2021. (A nod to Maher’s playing career too).Codswallop! It was this same ‘ostrich syndrome’ that allowed Ron’s failings to be brushed under the carpet for far too long.
I wish I had your patience. Maybe I'm more impatient than I thought i was but I am now struggling to see how Maher will improve. He's had plenty of opportunities in games where he could attack and go for it in a game or sit back and play for a draw and he always goes for the latter. Thanks for your thought provoking response, Rayleigh Dan, it made me reflect. I hope that you agree that this is very different to the examples you offer, all of which had very poor records (and some short tenures). I suspect you were tempted have added a few more names.)
As I noted, this has not been the season we had hoped for, but I believe we should stay loyal. Experience is gained in tough times as well as the good times.
All the best. UTB
Good post.If you look at it from an owners POV, we are into their first season as owners (not a full season as we had embargo in summer)
We are currently not looking like we will go down, and somewhat battling for play offs. We have been dreadful all season full stop. But we have picked up points. COSU have very little if not no reason at all to sack Maher.
What I can almost guarantee, is that they will back him in the summer to actually build a squad, up to him on how he does, and give him the first 8/10 games. Even if we’re still midtable at that point, they wont have much of a reason.
People might also wonder why with new owners and a bigger squad we’ve gone into reverse gear. Of course we know why .. or partly why. It’s amazing how quickly fans turn on managers and it doesn’t matter what they’ve done in the past or what the “stats” show if the quality of football is deemed to be sub standard. The fact we’ve been able to turn in a few decent performances amongst the recent dross makes me think there’s hope but let’s see. These 3 home games are huge for Maher. The team shouldn’t need motivating to turn their form of the last 2 games round and they ARE capable as Dagenham proved. Things will turn very toxic very quickly (again) if we lose tomorrow night.Good post.
Another way to look at it would be what would fans of other clubs think if they heard we sacked the manager who massively overachieved last year and, but for a points deduction, would have got us into the playoffs with a squad of 14. They’d probably check the league table to see if we were in the relegation zone as otherwise the move wouldn’t seem to make sense only to see that we’re top half. They’d then maybe check the form table in case our form had fallen off a cliff and see us 6th in the form table over the last 10 matches.
They’d then likely assumed we must have spent a fortune on transfers over the summer and see that we’re were under embargo for most of the summer and our big signings are Charley Kendall and unwanted free agent Macauley Bonne.
At which point they’d start scratching their heads and asking you what happened - did the owners have a falling out with him and want to get in their own guy? No, you say, they actually gave him and his staff all extensions. Well weren’t you saying he was the greatest thing since sliced bread last season? You respond yes, but the football is terrible. Oh, they ask, who’s the favourite to replace him then? You respond Neil Harris and they **** themselves laughing.
Sometimes those moves that make no sense from afar do actually make sense to those close up - Southampton sacked Nigel Atkins after he got them promoted and got in Pochettino - but often managerial changes make no real difference as the problem isn’t the manager in the first place.
It’s not motivation the team lacks but confidence. The players have been playing with fear rather than freedom, particularly at home.People might also wonder why with new owners and a bigger squad we’ve gone into reverse gear. Or an opportunity to put things right ..It’s not motivation the team lacks but confidence. The players have been playing with fear rather than freedom, particularly at home.
This is therefore a particularly bad time for a run of home games.
The only thing that will make COSU have to make decision on Maher & Co is if home attendances start to drop.
Amended for accuracyThe only thing that will make COSU have to make decision on Maher & Co is when home attendances start to drop.
The embargo was lifted on the 5th of July. We had freedom to sign for most of the summer.Good post.
