Question What are you reading?

Had Pierrepoint - a Family of Executioners recommended to me. It's just a catalogue of who was executed, how long a drop they were given (each individual condemned person has a "drop" calculated according to height and weight), who officiated and how the condemned man - or woman - went to their death. The most interesting part really has been how many WW2 war criminals the younger Pierrepoint was called to execute.

Couldn't he (famously) calculate people's weight just from a handshake?

Who, Albert? I've not got too far on him yet, it's been mainly his dad and uncle so far, he's just taking over from his uncle as number 1. All I've read so far is that they observe them unseen and are given their details by the Governor or senior military officer.

A history of Athens and the lead up to the Battle of Marathon and how that affected the whole of history by stopping the Persians when they were set to expand through all of the Med.

Yeah he was the one played by Timothy Spall in the film Pierrepoint, which sadly I haven't seen.

Am commnecing the New Year with a Ken Follett epic "Fall of Giants" - I think this is his attempt at War & Peace but set around WW1 - an monster of a hardback at 850 pages.

I really enjoyed it and the second of the trilogy as well.

The World without End and Pillars of the Earth books are both good reads too if you havent read them.

Got the "Post-Human" triology on Kindle for 99p and finished first book. Don't usually get into fiction books easily, but enjoyed this one.

I have read Pillars of the Earth - mammoth read but is a real cracker --Is World Without End a sequel?

Had to return Doris Lessing's Shikasta to the library before I'd finished it because it was reserved, a slow but rewarding read which makes some interesting points about the pointlessness of tribal politics, have reserved it to finish it.

Just read 'Kafka' graphic novel by David Mairowitz & Robert Cumb, which was a fantastic biography of Franz Kafka, giving great insight into the times he lived in and his character and writing whilst avoiding the "Kafkaesque" clichés,

I know this is rather uncouth, but I'm a huge Southend United fan (who visits SZ on a regular basis without posting much) and have my first novel out. It's priced at £1.99 on Amazon and it's called 'The Battenberg Bomb'.

I know you are (mainly!) a friendly lot so hope you don't mind me putting this on here. Also a handful of Shrimpers references in there: The Battenberg Bomb on Amazon

Thanks - and fingers crossed for promotion!
