Question What are you reading?

On a related subject, can anyone recommend any good audiobooks?

I listened to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and really enjoyed it. Others I've listened to have been less good. I suppose it's all about the narrator.

Dracula was poor as I couldn't warm to the people reading the various characters. Frankenstein was pretty good. I'm currently struggling through Master & Commander by Patrick OBrien but again, the narrator is not great.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Only one I've had was Jon Ronson's Psychopath Test, absolutely fascinating stuff though not fiction.

Bernard Cornwell - Sharpe series
Jack Higgins - Sean Dillon series
Lee Child - Jack Reacher series

I spend a fair bit of time driving and often stick an audiobook on to pass the time. These are all a decent listen.

The only book of that awful story that I actually managed to finish.

There wasn't that many big words in it. Keep soldiering on BarnaBaby...

I'm reminded of Hemmingway's riposte to Faulkner:
“Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don't know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use.”

Thanks, I've read most of the sharpe books, would be interesting to finish the series on audio book.

Poor Hemingway, afforded an 'M' to many in his moment of glory. Simple indeed.

Two books -

My **** Life So Far - Frankie Boyle autobiography. Definitely my kind of humour and a real laugh out loud book. Early days for this one but shaping up nicely.

Underground London - Stephen Smith - probably not most people's cup of tea but it fascinates me. Access and insight into the parts of London beneath the surface that most of us will never see in our lifetimes from sewer's to underground bunkers to archaeological finds.

If you want books for kids, then I can heartily recommend this little guy...

There's a whole series of books about Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy and his friends, written by Lynley Dodd. They are great fun, and it's about the only book (apart from the Wide Mouthed Frog) from childhood that my daughter refuses to throw out.

Also, of course, the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and others by Eric Carle, which is an all time classic.

Seem to remember reading that one to both our daughters back in the day.

Darren Shan was a bit... meh. Turns out that act one is actually the whole bloody book. Joy.

Just finished a book, Street Duty: Case One, Knock Down, by Chris Ould (£2 on the kindle, I highly recommend it), about a new (fictional) scheme for training teenage police officers. A fantastic read, can't wait for the next one next year, got the realistic tone (it starts with a RTC and gets a LOT darker from there) perfect for me.

Zadie Smith's NW.Not a patch on John Lancaster's recent Capital. It's much too literary and experimental for that.Nonetheless,an interesting read.

Just finished reading Lee Evans' autobiography. Blimey he had it hard.

It certainly explains why when I saw him at Wembley Arena just over a year ago he came over as unbelievably appreciative of his audience.

He's also a local(ish) lad. (He's moved from Chalkwell to Billericay recently.)

Live and Let Die byIan Fleming.

Certainly a different attitude to black people in those days. Bond being flabbergasted a black woman could drive a car for example. Different times!

Not that different - in South Africa, I've known someone who pulled over after he saw a black man drive towards him.
