Question What are you reading?

Fred Vargas is also excellent, same kind of vein, just French.
Told you that my wife was a keen reader of Fred Vargas. Talking to her today , she reckons that Thierry Jonquet is even better. Unfortunately, I can only see one of his books that has been translated into english, which is Mygale (Tarantula), this in turn was used for the basis of Almodovar's latest film La Piel que habito (The skin I live in). According to her it is well worth a read, if you can track it down.
My next order to Amazon will certainly include a Karim Fossum and possibly a Hakan Nesser. 'Echoes From the Dead' by Johan Theorin appears to get good reviews, has anyone on here read it?

Cheers for the recommendation. I read Theorin's second book, but not this one. If it's anything like his second it will be rvery good - bit claustrophobic, mind.

Which one, out of interest?

Dead Zone by King, which was OK. Too long. The Fossum one is/was Calling Out for You, which was good, except for the ending which was an anticlimax.

Now reading Linda Castillo's Pray for Silence, tried to get into another King - Desperation but it was dull, cliche-ridden and over-wrought.

Reading Steve Jobs' biography and as someone who isnt that interested in biographies normally its really interesting. Bloke was mad as a bag of badgers and half the time a total dickward but clearly a visionary. As someone who grew up and was fascinated by computers in the 80s with ZX81's, Spectrums, Dragon 32s etc its amazing to read how the industry started.

Prior to that finished the George RR Marting Ice and Snow series. Loved them and read all 6? books back to back. Only criticism is the story seems to be wandering around without much direction in the last two books. Where I thought it would start coming together he introduced even more characters and sub plots. No doubt have to wait ages for the next one...

Just finished Private Eye The First 50 years. An A-Z by Adam Macqueen.Hugely enjoyable.I'm sure Richie C and Napster will be pleased to hear there's an entry for Talbot too!:tease:

Stephen Kelman's Pigeon English. This got on the short list for the Booker.Enjoyable and very pc but not a patch on Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which was clearly a major influence.

I can now strongly recommend 'Mercy' by J Alder Olsen........don't expect piles of bodies but a taut thriller that builds up into a fine crescendo.

I am really enjoying this book. Sadly, I keep being interupted by parties and drinking so haven't read as much of it as I would like. Some good characters in it and an easy read.

Just got the first of those for the train back home on Friday, should be fun...

Giving the Karla trilogy a go at the moment - finished Tinker tailor soldier spy and now onto the Honourable school boy
I'm reading my way through the Smiley books in order - I'm half way through Tinker Tailor now having read The Call of the Dead, A Murder of Quality and (best of all) The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. I heard John Le Carre do a reading from it in Trafalgar Square last year for National Book Week - mesmerising stuff. I remember finding TTSS difficult to understand when I watched the TV series as a teenager but it's so much easier with a book......

Finished the Hunger Games trilogy, which are great.

Now reading "How to get a PhD". Got 3 pages into the Robert Enke book and was crying my eyes out, will leave that for a bit!

I usually only read books about the SAS that have flames on the cover however I am currently reading Wings of the Luftwaffe.

Totally agree. My son started reading them and I got completely hooked. They are cleverly based on the Theseus and the Minotaur legend. The first film is due out next year.

If you Survive, by George Wilson, WW2 American Soldier.

The title comes from his commanding officer who said "If you survive your first day, I'll promote you"
