West Ham Friendly

Well done the club. Good thinking. This game is likely to sell out anyway, and Southend fans can see exactly the same Southend players for a lot cheaper price at our various other friendly games. That means it will be the South East Essex Hamster fans who fill our coffers, so I like to think of pricing like this as a tax on stupidity.

Yes exactly. It is a blatent money spinner. They arent stupid, they know that the Southend/Armchair Spammers will come marching out for their only chance or effort this season to watch their "team". £20 for them will probably seem like a right touch, so let them get on with it and fill RH....think the idea of West Ham fans putting money into the club is rather funny. For £20 I doubt very much I will be going. Its a complete rip off for a freindly but like YB says what a great tax on stupidity.....

So we round off our Centenary ''celebrations'' by filling the stadium with Hamsters, great, it should not always be about money.

filling the stadium with hamsters, that would be hilarious I'd certainly pay 20 quid to seee that

Cannot believe a match against West Ham is part of our centenary celebrations. Thing is, to them, it is about the money, they know it will be a sell out and I am pretty sure they wont care who fills the ground - as long as it is full.

Well the good news is that no doubt the cash made will be available for new players, a significant 'warchest' as they say at the club,or giving Freddy a decent new contract.

Like the warchest we have meant to have had for the last year or so? The warchest that bought us last minute panic buys Harrold, Paynter and Foran? Would prefer us to play Seevic Girls Team and charge 50p to get in!

We spent a million last year which also paid for Clarke/Hammell and McCormack.

Harrold wasnt a panic buy.

No, Id never make that claim, but he never cost us that much either and as was bought as one for the future cant be completely written off just yet.

Lets see how he does at League one level.

Dont get me wrong I would love him to prove me wrong, I hope he does.....

i'm wondering how many on here have let the club know how they feel about this game. As i'm having a particular bad day in the office i'd thought i'd let the club know my feelings on the "prestigious" pre season friendly and have sent them the following.

"Before I start I'd just like to point out that I don't expect a reply but thought I should let you know my feelings.

I have just seen the details of the "centenary match" and to be honest I'm shocked at how the club appear to have misjudged supporters feelings.

I can understand that the club is in the business of trying to make money and obviously want to fill the ground, but of all the teams to pick you come up with West Ham.

I'm sure that most employees at the club must realise that the majority of Southend fans do not particularly like West Ham mainly due to the number of people living in Southend that support West Ham instead of The Shrimpers. This would put many people off going in the first place before seeing the prices.

£20 an adult & £10 a child for a pre season friendly! Surely you are joking. I'd rather keep the £30 and put it towards the petrol costs of going to carlisle. Your recent fans survey asked "do you feel valued by the club?" I didn't feel valued before and feel even less so now. I've just spent not far off £600 on season tickets for me & my son so this £30 is a step too far.

I dare say you will fill the ground anyway as whatever seats are empty due to our fans staying away will be snapped up by west ham fans anyway. I hope they enjoy the celebrations of our clubs 101st anniversary and pay the club lots of money.

I'm sure you monitor fans websites such as shrimperzone & the shrimpers on line (note shrimpers not blues) and hopefully you will see that these are not just my views but that of many."

It won't do any good but it made me feel better:)

It's a tough decision to make for this - on the one hand I'd like to boycott the game as inviting my most disliked team , Wet Sham for a 'prestige' friendly is a joke, and an expensive one at £20.

However, I detest the idea that West Ham fans think they are the most popular team in our back yard, I'd like to wear my Southend shirt and like thousands of others in blue prove them wrong. Also, the thought that potentially a moronic, idiotic, BNP voter Wet Sham fan could be sitting in my usual seat instead of me makes me feel rather uneasy.

I'll make this tricky decision in the next few weeks...

Stop bloody whinging everyone, £20 is reasonable for a local derby against a Premiership club, and I think the club have been superb ensuring that ticket sales after season ticket holders will go to those already on the ticketing database. This will ensure the home end will be mainly blue and the Hamsters will be confined to the North Bank.

Great email, but has anyone ever received an email reply? I've sent three in the past, two with simple questions and never heard anything.

How about we all endorse the above email by Southender? Then perhaps Scriven can print off and show to his bosses.

Hmm the price maybe a tad steep ...But I would hate for Wet Spam fans to fill the ground .then go on forever saying we have no Loyal fans.

They after all going to be paying the same price and we have first go at the tickets.

I'm not going, but then I've never been bothered by friendlies regardless of the opposition. As far as I can see it will be a big crowd which will make a decent amount of money - and no I still won't be going and couldn't really care less. Roll on the 1st league game of the season - thats when the action starts.

Just to let you all know that i've had a reply already to my email this morning.

Mr King has stated that

1. The prices are also agreed with west ham

2. The proceeds are not all ours

3. The costs of staging the event are considerable

and

4. because we are playing prem opposition and there will be other "activities and events" they consider it good value.

Thats cleared that up then!

I'm sure he meant to apologise for choosing the hamsters & thank me for my continued support but maybe he just forgot to type that line.
