I've just been sent this. McLeod and Garvan confirmed. Unsure about the Millwall defender though ...

Classic, only at Southend, we are starting the season by the looks of it with only 1 fit senior striker! Noel by his own admission will take a few games to get match fit.At least last year Phil thought he was going places with the 3 Strikers, Weston, Coulthirst and Barnard added to Corr. Hope this doesn't have longer term consequencies for the season

Again got to hand it PB, if we were to sign all three they would again improve the quality of the squad, McLeod is a proven goal scorer, smith and garbanzo would provide experience and cover in the squad. McLeod in particular would be a great signing. I understand people's opinions on signing him and the fee, but PB would be aware of that and I'm sure wouldn't waste his time at this stage of the season on unrealistic targets.

Jack Smith has pedigree but his injury record is a concern. However, it could mean his wages are relatively affordable. I'm not sure why we'd need Garvan but he has played a lot of games at a high level. McLeod I'd be delighted with, but can't see us shelling out the kind of dosh Crawley want, unless Bentley leaves.

I am pretty certain it is not "only at Southend".
There are many clubs who are also pretty skint, search for players that will accept wages that are perhaps below their expectation and have to make do.

Agreed, any player without a club at this stage of the new season will be getting pretty desperate by now, so the agents will be negotiating at a lower level wage wise than they would have been back in May.

If Brown is meeting McLeod then a bid must be imminent and if we are going to be matching or bettering Notts County bid of 100k then Bentley is a goner 10000000% if not then just wow

I said yesterday that I was concerned..........today, I'm just confused. I was prepared to accept the fact that we were 3 or four players short a couple of days before the new season kicks off, due to financial constraints. Now we are talking, inevitably, of shelving out a load of cash for a new striker (one, of course, I'd be happy with). So, if it's not financial problems holding up signings, what's been the problem?
One suggestion has been that this money could come from the sale of a player (Bentley). If that was the case, hours before facing Fleetwood, strikers would suddenly appear to be the least of our problems!

The delay has almost certainly be affordability. A player who looks for £200k a year in June..and finds himself with £0 a year in August? May just become affordable.

No way will we sign mcleoad. Notts County had a 125k cash up front bid rejected by crawley. We won't pay more than that for a 30 year old.

Don't think it's necessarily the case that Crawley want more than £125k, they may have just been reluctant to sell him to a club in the same division, especially one they probably consider rivals for promotion.
