I wonder if Rene Howe could do a job for Southend alongside David Mooney in League 1. Howe is 28, six feet in height, experienced and has a reasonable goal scoring record, but he has lost his way a bit recently.

Phil Brown was interested in signing him when he first came to Southend. Howe might be the sort of player who could do well with the right manager.

I dont know you Rob but would feel happier if we signed you than Howe who is absolute *****.

So it's piggot that is the one that is close to signing according to today's echo, ok he's a striker and we need them and I know he scored the dramatic goal at wembley and that led to is getting promoted, but he's a player that couldn't get in our started 11, he preferred corr!! IMO this signing is not going to make our team stronger

Fairly cheap forward, an almost one in three record, can learn of Mooney - Dont think anyone will be punching the air with delight but on papers I think its a good move.

Maybe the Pig will be better suited to League One football? I think he would be a good signing but I would be very concerned if we start the season with just Mooney, Pig and Williams. We need an experienced striker in the shape of Davies/Hunt and then a youngster on loan from a prem kid. If we could get someone like MK Dons always manage to get like Afobe/Bamford who smash a load of goals for them.

That's not strictly true. When Piggott and Cassidy first come they were keeping Corr out the side. Corr was definately first choice when playing one up front and I'd agree with that. Pigot has plenty of potential and I believe could become a top league 1 striker with more experience.

Think we need someone a bit stronger than Piggot to play along side mooney, does not look strong, or does not hold the ball up well.

People say he is young, give him a chance, but in league 1 if you do this and wait, you could be sliding down the table.

we don't need someone who may become stronger and better, we need them now.

Thats true but I never saw Pigott out of his depth last season so dont see why he can't do a job in League One.

Many thanks, DTS, but I think your confidence in my soccer abilities is misplaced.

I am not advocating we sign Rene Howe. But many of Southend's best signings have been players that have shown flashes of potential but for one reason or another they could not put it together at other clubs. Let's face it if we are looking to sign a proven goalscorer, the player is going to be very expensive or a conference league player.

By the way, Joe Pigott does look like he would be a really good signing for the club. He is young, hungry and a pretty good finisher with both feet. Moreover, as others noted, he could really improve with more first team football.

I wouldn't be that happy signing Piggott. I think there is better out there for the same wages. He obviously scored a massive goal for us, but 7 in 21 in League Two is nothing brilliant for League One standards. He also scored the majority of them in a purple patch he had IIRC and went through a barren run afterwards.... If we do sign him, I hope he wont be our main striker and just rotational

I havnt got the echo today, but just saw a tweet from CP saying that it is Noel Hunt that he is meeting today and hoping he will sign. Is there further news that Piggott might sign as well? Would be happy with Piggott, Hunt and Mooney.

Thats a 1 in 3 ratio which is good for a striker and you wont get better.

He did go off the boil and lost his place in the first team, but we need to look at players with potential rather than a proven goalscorer, who we wont be able to afford.

Pigott has shown he can do it, he is worth a gamble.

I would like us to get someone with a bit more experience in as well though, and Hunt will fill that gap. With Hunt/Pigott and Mooney thats not a bad blend on paper.

I couldn't agree more. Hunt can also be used as a wide forward, which means it doesn't have to be one or the other with Mooney (because let's face it, neither will be happy on the bench and their wages will be towards the higher end of our budget too). That's on the presumption PB uses his favoured 4-2-3-1.

If we got Pigott and Hunt along with Mooney + someone with pace (if Williams isn't up to scratch) then I think that's a decent rebuilding job over a couple of weeks.

Brown talks in the Echo about hoping Hunt "agrees to the offer on the table". If the Club have put together a package/tabled an actual offer then you'd assume that they've got positive vibes off Hunt and that he is actually remotely interested. Otherwise it'd never get as far as making an offer. Fingers crossed something positive happens as a result of the meeting today.

Also in one of the echo articles it says we are still in talks with McLaughlin and O'Neill but those deals are unlikely to wrapped up anytime soon.

Is it just me but all very quiet on the transfer front at the moment - my fear is the longer we continue without signing anyone the more likely we will be relying on too many loanees - especially up front

I have a feeling either the pig or hunt will have signed on the dotted line by the hammers game and if we manage both it will great work by the club .

McLaughlin has been on Forest's tour of Sweden playing in all 3 games, mainly at left back where he has played before for Forest.

If we can sign up Hunt & Pigott soon and then get McLaughlin along with another striker, possibly on loan, then I'd say it would have been a very good bit of business.

Not sure its quiet. PB talking to Hunt today, reported that things are progressing well with Piggott, still wants to get McLaughlin and the lad from Burnley in. Sounds busy to me
