I think Mackail-Smith would be a good signing for us, dependent on wages and if we were actually interested. He was a class act before and as many people have said the only way we have a chance on these types of players is if their careers have hit the buffers a little bit.

If he's on trail at Luton then he's obviously not adverse to trying to prove he's worth a deal so would be happy to see him come in for a game or two and see where we got to.

Doubt we could compete with Luton on wages, plus if he is already on trial with Luton im guessing PB isnt interested. Certainly not been any mention on social media regarding this unlike the Noel Hunt, Kevin Davies rumours etc

Had the same discussion regarding Mooney and Portsmouth on the basis Portsmouth were a big club and certain to go. Sadly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is all too easy.

Like Mooney he may be keener to play at a higher level than just wages- however agree if we are in for plenty of experience already then this is probably not what we need.

Stephane Zubar coming for a trial with a view to loan from Bournemouth.

Was on loan at York last year and only got a contract extension at Bournemouth this season as it was a clause if they were promoted. Can't really say I'm at all excited about this if true buttt it is only a trial.

Hasn't played for the Cherries for 2 1/2 years. Been on loan to a few clubs since then and also suffered a serious knee injury. We will see.......

On 5 July 2014 Connolly signed for League Two club Luton Town on a one-year contract.[SUP][/SUP] He played in only six games in all competitions for the club, struggling with fitness and injuries throughout the season. He was released early from his contract in April 2015.................ummmmmmmmmmmmm!

Sometimes triallists are brought in early in pre season to make up the numbers. We don't have a sub right back, get a triallist in and John White only has to play 45 minutes.

Connolly was a very good Championship player..unfortunately blighted by injuries
We will assess his condition and fitness and it works for both parties to start with- he needs to be playing and if in doing so he convinces us of this return to fitness then we might offer a contract (a year plus option would be the most I would guess).

But they both have been good at a higher level and this is what friendlies and trialists are about- you would not get a quality player with no fitness issues trailing for anyone- they don't need to.

BTW M-Smith is at Luton on a similar basis. He needs somewhere to get fit and know the medical team/physio there and Still very well (from his time at Daggers). Both parties are not talking until further down the line when the player has decided what level he thinks he can play at and LT have assessed his fitness.

I suspect if he proves his fitness he will want to play at the highest level he can like 90% of player- hence he won't want LT

He lives in West Sussex near Horsham so we wouldn't be the worst option

We could do much worse than a fit Mackail-Smith :-)

Interesting times - be interesting to see how well Williams does tonight as well.

He was gash tonight. Did nothing of note against a village team and highlited how far he is from the first team imho

I wonder if Rene Howe could do a job for Southend alongside David Mooney in League 1. Howe is 28, six feet in height, experienced and has a reasonable goal scoring record, but he has lost his way a bit recently.

Phil Brown was interested in signing him when he first came to Southend. Howe might be the sort of player who could do well with the right manager.

15 Games 0 Goals last season and 34 games 4 goals the season before. A striker who scores 4 goals in 50 games in League 2 accross 2 seasons doesn't strike me as a player we are going to need or want in League 1.

So it's piggot that is the one that is close to signing according to today's echo, ok he's a striker and we need them and I know he scored the dramatic goal at wembley and that led to is getting promoted, but he's a player that couldn't get in our started 11, he preferred corr!! IMO this signing is not going to make our team stronger

But maybe if we had never seen him we would be clamouring for him to sign. I think if he does commit, then a full season with Brown and we may just see him reach his full potential.

Brown knows him, knows how he plays and hes still young. Given a chance, which he surely will be if he signs, he could do wonders. I'm optimistic about Pigott signing. Granted, he'll always be remembered for that goal, but isn't it worth giving him a chance to be remembered for something else too :-)

I'd be happy with Piggott, he had a dip in form but most players at this level do, his contribution over his whole loan spell was very good.
