Transfer news
Some would say, whether you rate the Brentford type model like Stan does , or not , that its failed and is not working.

It isnt working because we have hardly tried it

Hayes, Hopper, Bonne Waldron and Walker have a combined age of 140 ! ( av age 28 ) 4 of whom have played in the EFL which Zoners also saying they wanted more experience from the likes of EFL, Have certainly got their wish

But I dont think we can say we have really pressed the green light on the Brentford model type signings with only one under 22 brought in,, It seems the main entrance doors these days for the model to gererate saleable future income is via local regional clubs for under 21 talent or the masses honed in under 21 sides from the Premiership down.
As has been pointed out nowhere for youngsters we bring in to develop and to play. A key part of that plan was the B team. So yes the model has been pretty much ignored.

I think he could be one that does well and moves on . Really pleased with the signing and believe he will be managed well and that not too much pressure inappropriately placed on his shoulders

However he is actually 23 years old and we have only signed one player permanently in past 3 years under the age of 22
Is that Jack Wood?

Who hasn’t panned out as hoped.

21-25 is the sweet spot for me. Their best football ahead of them but with some experience of senior football (and life) behind them.

Hayes, Parillon, Wind, Kendall, Gubbins, Appiah-Forson (and loanees Pepple, Golding, Goodliffe, Harness) from this season in that age bracket.

Most footballers, to my knowledge especially those higher up the pyramid, set themselves up as limited companies or are self employed. Therefore, the tax implications are different. This would also affect the clubs liability for NI. Therefore, this post is relevant to this thread just in case any mod's are lurking with their finger on the delete button. :Whistling:
For their image rights etc, but not their salaries, is my understanding.

Up and until just recently we have not had an opportunity to make it work. Give it time.

Yes important
But many as proven this year in our league, pretty much already we’ll developed in prem league or championship and playing some games at a higher level, numerous reserve league games, plus competing in various cups of men’s football and thus successfully holding down key positions in the league leaders sides for example
These numerous lads don’t need a B team and some higher up EFL sides also dispensing with b teams
If you are bringing in 10 of these a season to look at you may well also stand a chance of snapping up a few of them that go on to demand a good fee

I agree but this is bringing in players who are ready to be playing as part of the first team. Well they have to be because there is nowhere else. The clearly discarded plan was to bring in probably younger players with great potential, to develop them to being ready for the first team through a B team playing men’s football?

To me what you describe is, or should be, business as usual at any competent club. It’s just basic player recruitment or should be. Recruiting players you are ready to go and others have already put the development in.

I don't think he'd fit the age profile of the kind of players we're after (which is depressing as he was in my year at school).

Could be an experienced head in the middle though

Did he ? of dear. I did say based on what I saw, which was just a few touches, but very skilled. Assume you also saw ?

I did. I then went home and watch the Highlights of Man City v Real Madrid where I saw Jude play in the champions League and Score.

No disrespect to our new player, but I saw him have a few touches against a team named after a building society.

Similar Skills indeed.

Maybe relative skill would have been a better wording. I dont think anyone believes this kid is at the same level as an elite level player.

Yes I fully agree but given the lack of the b team Avenue , it is clear that the Avenue the league leaders are adopting successfully at this point in time, and a number of EFL sides, is to grab polished under 21s , especially from the prem and championship and some from league 1 and 2.
Many a Pepple a forward, mid or back , some 3 or 4 at a time ,capable of going straight into the team /squad and making a big difference, also with a season long loan in place
As I understand it that’s not an Avenue we are overly keen on, although acknowledging Pepple and Golding successes, maybe more so at present than Gubbins and Crowther..?

Plus you get a good look at them and a better prospect of a future buy?

I agree but if they’re good/ full of potential you develop them for someone else - and the more successful the less we can afford them and everyone else benefits (the club that can afford them and the club we developed him for).

Of course the more average the loanee, and the progress they make, the more we can afford them- and the less we want them permanently. Notwithstanding they might not be outstanding in the initial loan but can see potential no one else can. Maybe that why we eventually got Gubbins back.

So the danger is you end up largely in a perpetual use of the loan system, having players for a few months at a time, and never getting the benefits from any significant sell ons. On the other hand you avoid paying £££ in the first place bring in ready performers on a permanent, annd you get the performances whilst you have them…And as above you might get lucky. It happens.

I would, if the original plan has been quietly buried, prefer a kind of lower league Peterborough model. Buy players/ spend a bit of ££ on youngish players who are talented and our new recruitment process has high faith in wherever they are, and who give genuine prospect of sell value.

Mid term I believe that could provide meaningful returns- but it requires investment first. I feel like we are the gambler that has turned up to the casino, with all the tools to succeed, a great plan but no chips…unless our Seattle friends put his money where his software is..

PS none of which is to say some use of the loan system doesn’t make good sense.
