Yes, there was clearly some provocation, but surely the best response is to just ignore it and laugh at them instead. However, it seems that this is too hard for some fans as they don't have enough between the ears.

Jesus Christ. So you're telling me that if you & you're austistic 9-year-old son had been in the firing line of coins being thrown, you'd stand there & laugh at them?

Move out the way and bring it to the attention of the stewards. Let them look like the ***** and be the ones getting nicked and fined.

Had the incident occurred out of the blue then I would also label the pair morons. However, this was not the case and so the moron tag should be removed. Sometimes the reality of a situation has to be addressed. Thankfully no one got badly hurt and as a result Uncle Ron will have to pay for the extra policing from now on, which should have been there in the first place. Perhaps the Col Ewe clatterers have done everybody a favour in the long room.

The guy who let the smoke bomb off is a moron.

Jeez, you're unreal!

What, the same stewards who were trying to hold the crowd back? The same stewards who themselves were under attack? Luckily for us though, I think PC Pointless managed to catch some good footage on his pervert camera. Really helped us

And move where exactly mate? Dunno if you were in the West, but we were packed in like sardines. The stairways, the walkways were rammo.

Yep, Bazza, fair comment and I've lifted it out of context, which Isn't fair.

My point, I think, is that police filming is not a deterrent in the spur of the moment as I doubt old matey boy would have had that on his mind as he leapt over the wall, but a barking police dog and/or astrong police presence would have made him think twice.

It wasn't a deterrent to him, but maybe to others. I agree that more police and no trouble

I was at the game with my autistic 9 year old son and trying to explain the fan incident to him is proving quite difficult. I have explained it over and over and my son always responds with same question. "Why?"
In answer to that, it's quite easy I'd have thought, just say they had all had too much to drink and were behaving badly as a result.

What you should be doing is teaching the young boys that sometimes, when no one else is there to defend you, when coins are raining down, when our stewards are being continually assaulted, when one of our players is assaulted, that enough is enough, and the bully has to be taken down. Col Ewe were the violent aggressive bullies. A couple of our lads stood up to them.

Stood up to them by making the stewards job harder and getting a ban from the club. Could have worked that one a bit better....

I'm sure my opinion is echoed by many. Part of me was glad the Col Ewe got it served back to them. And part of me is a little saddened at what happened. You should have seen what used to go on in the sixties and seventies. Yesterday was nothing in comparison. So some youngsters saw some football agro, so what. So did I when I was a lad, far far worse stuff than yesterday. And so did loads of our supporters who attend to this day. It hasn't put them off supporting us has it.

I would say though that kids shouldn't be sat in close proximity to our more lively supporters That was a mistake by the club.

The sight of those two guys single handedly charging the Col Ewe after their antics, will live long in my memory. They defended their club under intense provocation. I'd buy them a drink. And that is my opinion.

And it clearly hasn't effected you. You're as sane as the next man. baaah.

David, please go and support some other team. Millwall sounds about right for someone of your sad opinions.

What a legend the guy will become. Charging the Col Ewe with fist primed. From where I sit in the East Stand it was a site to behold.

Part of me was glad it happened. Reminded me of the days of old when anything could go down at anytime. Roots Hall is our turf. Col Ewe were fighting with the stewards, our lone punchman had had enough, so he springs from his seat, premeditation engrained in his body language. Wallop. Take that you northern rabble. And then, when the Col Ewe go after Bolger, what appears to be the same man again, leaps out of the west stand, defends his player, and upholds the honour of the club. Had I been over there and seen an attack on one of our players, I may well of weighed in too. Of course part of me wishes the trouble had never happened. But part of me thought - go on my son!

Fair enough

The people throwing coins were looking for a reaction and they got one. I imagine getting a Southend fan arrested will be viewed as an achievement to them, aside from the guy that got punched I doubt any of them felt they had been stood up to. All charging over to them did was prove that their attempts to aggravate the home fans had been successful.

Colchester father receives home son from yesterday's match. Dad remarks that son has a black eye. Son says - yeah, there we was throwing coins, thumping the stewards, hitting one of their players. It was great. It was all going so well. The stewards couldnt handle us. The few coppers there didn't bother with us. We could do what we wanted and hurt who we wanted. Then this bloke comes over and starts hitting us. That just ain't fair dad. He was the villain.

Already had 256k views! Not really the publicity the club needs and is such a shame on a great day. Hopefully the culprit is dealt with accordingly.

What's wrong with our club having a little spice in its support roots hall should be an intimidating place to go

I hope nobody goes running there mouth and grassing on people that's the lowest thing you can do

If people were throwing coins at you in the street, or at your home, or your car, would you just ignore them? I suspect you will say you would call the police, but what if the police do nothing to protect you? When people are attacking you by throwing coins and the police do nothing and security are unable to prevent it happening, for whatever reason, then nobody should be that surprised if people decide to take the law in their own hands?! That is the reality of human behaviour. If people were throwing coins at me, or my kids, and nobody was able to stop it happening, then I would act myself. It's called natural justice and you will find it happening more often now we have over 800 fewer bobbies in Essex owing to austerity measures. How do any of us know if the fella who dished it out wasn't hit himself by one of the coins? To say you are ashamed to be a fan etc really is pathetic. This is life, things happen, we don't all love each other, worse things happen every day on our streets without any provacation. Time to move on!!

I agree 'Magnum'.

With possible flashpoints you need people with the power of arrest to be on hand.

I've witnessed heavy handed security at away matches in the past. Chiefly in the West Midlands at West Brom and Birmingham, where the crowds are controlled by nightclub doorman style security. Not pleasant.
Just flicking through this discussion so not sure if this has been mentioned but, stewards wear the yellow jackets at Southend games and the security wear the orange jackets. The security all have to be trained (near to be security or doormen elsewhere). What worries me is that what would had happened if the security had started hitting the fans back? Then it would had got nasty and I dare a say a free for all would had happened.

This is a good point.

When the second fat lad tried to get to them 5 mins after the first incident the security gave him a good seeing to, bundled him out in a headlock, if only they had the bottle to do it to the first one. Seems if you're a fat teenager they will step in but if you're a fit strong bloke who can handle himself they bottle it.

Personally I would rather people like you go and support another team, where's the true passion and support ? It was us and the stewards who were wronged, why not have the balls to stick up for your own teams fans. There were some real nutters amongst them, they were raging throughout the first half, very very aggressive, beyond normal taunting, goading and banter, they wanted a ruck, well be careful what you wish for comes to mind.
