Good news all round so far. Still need a creative goal scoring midfielder to compliment the rest. If Deegan is asking too much, then use his dosh to get someone, hopefully Wordsworth.

Midfielder thrilled to extend his Roots Hall stay.
Southend United midfielder Michael Timlin was delighted to commit his future to the Club and can't wait to begin what he believes will be an exciting season.

The 30-year-old put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the option of a third and is likely to be a key player in the third tier for the Blues next season.

“I'm really happy to get the deal sorted and done and dusted,” Timlin said on Thurday after completing the deal.

“I'm looking forward to next season with the exciting signings the gaffer wants to make to add to an already strong squad.

“I was fortunate to have the most interest I've ever had. The clubs interested in me got into double figures but I said to my agent to let me enjoy my break and to get things done when I returned. I had a great two weeks off then I sat down with my agent.”

And the former Swindon Town man says Southend was at the top of his list when it came to deciding where his future lay.

“I always was adamant I wanted to know what the situation with Southend first. I feel I've had a really good career here and the fans have taken to me. I'm working really well with Phil Brown – he seems to bring out the best in me.

“We needed to get promoted and we stepped up to the plate. With the additions the manager wants to bring in, I think we can be a real force in League 1 next season.”

Excellent and MT's signing will send a positive message to those yet to accept new deals and potential new signings. Well done all concerned:thumbsup:.

This is great for more than one reason

1. We get the services of Timlin for 2 or 3 more years, a pivotal player
2. He chose us over Millwall, showing other players Southend is a good place to come and play
3. Shows the intent from PB/RM that we are aiming high and not just to tread water

Well done everyone involved in getting Timlin to sign on the dotted line

Erm

Thats precisely my point :headbang:

You implied that the only difference between a captain and any other "leader" type player, was the armband.

Being the captain means you're the focal point of the team, and therefore would have a better position to influence team mates. Timlin would be a good captain, that's all I was trying to say. :winking:

No he didn't. He implied the opposite that giving someone the armband doesn't make them a leader. Timlin has all the leadership qualities, he doesn't need the armband

I think you're missing the point... I'm not saying giving him the armband would make him a leader, as he already is a leader. Surely you'd want a leader as your captain, therefore you would give him the armband over someone like White - who IMO isn't the strongest leader.

Because he doesn't shout or because he isn't someone who is respected well enough amongst the players?

I have no qualms with White being captain. He's not the best choice in my opinion, but I'm certainly not saying he isn't respected... quite the opposite is true, in fact.

So if he is respected by his peers , ( didnt he come third in the players player award?) why wouldnt he make a good captain

Bob Moore wasnt a shouter, went calmly about his business , but had that determination to succeed, White is in that category... We don´t see him behind scenes... and what he does elsewhere for the club....

To be honest I took a while to appreciate Timlin, but he certainly came good last season to ensure promotion.
The same with Brown, but warming to his influence on the club. Just hope he knows how to fashion our attacking play next season.
We could be looking at another promotion push:smile:

Why is this a debate about White's suitability to be captain? All I said was that Timlin would make a good captain. If we had David Beckham as captain, I would still have made that same comment!
