Football fans have been left excited for their club’s future after a deal was signed off which will release £20 million of funds for their stadium’s regeneration.

Southend United supporters are delighted after the council agreed the deal to build up to 805 homes at the Fossetts Farm site in Eastern Avenue on Thursday, subject to DD and planning approval.

Shrimpers supporter, Daniel Mays, says he and his family are celebrating the move as he believes this deal will give the club the opportunity to develop Roots Hall and “push up the leagues”, creating a “new chapter” for the club.
He added the current ground is in a state of “disrepair” and supporters have regularly worked to keep it going over the years.

He said: “I think it’s a great deal. It provides the opportunity to develop Roots Hall and is going to be massive for the football club, the city, the fans. The ground certainly needs it.

“Roots Hall is rundown, it’s in disrepair. Season after season, fans have gone down just to keep it going. It’s had the bare minimum done on it for years and years.

“This could create fantastic opportunities for the football club, for investment, for fresh seats.

"It will create a better atmosphere, a better experience for home and away fans."

He added fans had never wanted to move from their spiritual home and everyone will be pleased to stay at Roots Hall.

Daniel regularly attends the games with his sons Callum and Thomas, and father, Bob.

He was excited by the prospect of the investment bringing back old fans, as well as a new generation of supporters.

“What we have currently is not far off being derelict, now the consortium are starting to work on these and have announced fans can go back into North Bank,” he added.

“The opportunity to get old fans back is massive.

“It could create a new chapter for the club. There’s funds there for them to improve the facilities, the training grounds, the medical rooms, the opportunity to really bring the club into the new century. We’re not living in the doldrums anymore, we’re in a new era. We can use that money to be successful and push up the leagues, and bring the good times back.”

Up to £20 million released to Southend United was based on outdated proposal for 1300 homes. 800 at Fossetts and 500 on Roots Hall site. That’s rather obviously all changed since takeover.
BBC recently got it more accurate although header is incorrect.
‘Southend-on-Sea City Council agreed that 805 homes could be built at Fossetts Farm, which would ultimately release between £10m to 12m’. That’s the correct ballpark if all goes to plan..

I thought the homes for RH had moved to FF?? So instead of a stadium sized hole the number of homes at FF would be increased? Has that changed? Must admit to not really following it so much…

I must admit i thought the same as the stadium was no longer being built there. It does seem odd that the rat is willing it seems to just lose 500 flats he already had planning permission for on RH.

Perhaps @Medway Blue could throw more light on it?

The mix of housing has changed, less flats, more houses. The flats that are proposed are low rise.
I know you keep an eye on these things @Holy Joe , wasn't there something written into the plans ( agreement with the council) being accepted and that the rat has to make payments to SUFC as the project progresses and not wait until it is finished?

Not that i ever believe he will build any of it but just sell it off with planning.

The old figure was based on high rise (flats), with only a minority of houses.

For a variety of reasons, the council squeezed the Martins into changing to a heavy majority of low rise (mostly houses).

This has reduced the number of dwellings.

I need to catch-up with the plans, but I think the idea was that the development would be built in 3 phases, with funds released as the construction of each phase begins.

Yes phased release of funds from 'profits' although I don't recall any details being made public.

I made my first visit to a Fanzone (Ipswich Town) last Saturday as I was with a brass band playing carols at Portman Road before the game against Newcastle.

It's on a fenced in astroturf training pitch next to one of their stands. There was a basic bag search to get in and then it was a mixture of picnic tables, a marquee which had I think a bar inside, a few food trucks, a DJ, a small club shop in a container and a big screen showing the lunchtime kick off.

It was pretty basic to be honest, but did the job and seemed pretty popular. They had a young fan on the mic. announcing the team, and a brief interview with a returning former player and that was about it.

Not rocket science to put together and I reckon made a few bob for the club as it was pretty popular as a meeting place for fans before the game. Oh, and my seat at the game had a dirty great post blocking the view of the goal up the far end, so everything is not always greater in the Premier League!
