The Olympics thread

To be fair to Phelps he at least refers to himself as most decorated Olympian. I've got to disagree about Carl Lewis James, he has been caught out using performance enhancing drugs so he is tainted by that IMO.

I edited my post about Lewis almost as soon as I wrote it. You're quite right - his drugs 'issues' had slipped my mind (not quite sure how or why)

I never liked Lewis largely because he was so sniffy about Ben Johnson being stripped of the gold and the world record in Seoul.

Daley Thompson pricked his pompous bubble in LA with his usual sledge hammer wit T shirt slogan asking if the worlds second most greatest athlete (Lewis) was gay.

Or worse, use that dreadful Amercanism 'winningest'.

Problem I have is that it's far easier to win multiple medals in swimming than other sports, such as track and field. Of his 11 medals, five have come in relays.

Don't get me wrong - he is clearly quite brilliant, but I too would more inclined to vote for Emil Zatopek, or Paavo Nurmi. I'd add Carl Lewis but there are always the drugs doubts there.

Phelps is 'lucky' that the swimming schedules are arranged in such a way that it allows him to take part in so many events. Yes he clearly the best swimmer in the world, but I'm not sure being allowed to take part in so many events is really what the Olympics is about.
