The Olympics thread

Can't wait - why would you? Ladies kicked off the football today and as always, very entertaining stuff. I'm not going to go as far as to say high quality but at least the US lost and the Argentinian keeper didn't let in 7.

Probablly my favourite olympian was Lillian Board 2nd in the 400 metres in the 1968 olympics in mexico. This gutsy performer died just 2 years later from cancer aged just 22 years. In 1967 she came from the rear of the field to first to win gold for the british commonwealth in Los Angeles and in 1969 won the european 800 metres title as well as anchoring the 4x 400 metres relay to victory.
Those were the days when athletes gave their all and relatively drug free

Surprised nobody has mentioned beach volleyball.

Remember that very well, she was beaten by the French girl Collette Besson? IIRC.

Great memories of Mexico 68 was David Hemery romping the 400m hurdles with John Sherwood winning the bronze.

My first memory of the Olympics is waking up around 6, turning on the TV and watching the beach volleyball, must've been Sydney - Aus/Brazil. Pretty good way to start the day if I may say so myself.

Magical Moment from Athens 2004 was the name changing to Phillippa Funnell as Pippa is Greek for blow-job.

No one can ever take form me my memories, yes i may be old nut i did have the privelige of being at the world cup in 1966 long live bobby more and Lillian Board

Good to see Essex boy Mark Foster will be leading the GB team at the opening ceremony.

Not so good to read about Frankie Gavin though. Nuts.

Gutted for Fun-time Frankie... a big blow to lose the reigning World Amateur Champion from the squad.

:(

I'm looking forward to seeing (hopefully) Kelly Sotherton compete in a Kluft-free heptathlon. She has a chance. And if Paula Radcliffe does, by some miracle, pull off the marathon, I may well shed a tear for her.

Other than that, we should all be focussing on the velodrome... Pendleton, Wiggins, Cavendish, Hoy... come on folks, show them who's best!

Terrible shame for the lad, he must be distraught to not make it.

Great news about Mark Foster though, Essex leading the Brits out, just as it should be!

Apparantly this is Gail Emms last Olympics - I hope she and Nathan win gold (despite him being a tool). My gym is at the National Badminton Centre and I often see her there - honey!

i'm hoping Chris Tomlinson gets fit as he is quality when he puts it together. along with the track and field.. i always like the hockey and boxing

Agree with you about Mark Foster.

The Frankie Gavin business has left me somewhat bewildered, how can he be having trouble making the weight so close to the event he must have trained for since he won the World Amateur Title?

I think it wasn't the fact he was overweight due to eating, it's just he's bulked up a bit too much I guess.

First disapointment in Craig Fallon, not getting gold. I am no expert on Judo (although it looks pretty easy)

Still on for a bronze though. I am having a bit of a sport overload today with the Olympics, cricket and football.
