The Olympic Games 2024 Paris

Murray and Evans pulling off another great escape to get to the quarters.
This is going to be one of our great British adventures if it carries on. Full TV coverage, visits to schools, interviews with their uncles and aunties. the lot.

Thought Reilly had it and the best contestant both yesterday in qualifying and again today. He scored 90s in all 4 rides, no-one else was close.

Yee’s finish was unbelievable, no idea how he managed it! Similarly the Women’s Quadruple Sculls, terrific finish to pip the Netherlands for the gold.

Lots and lots of feelings regarding the Italian female boxer who had to fight the Algerian boxer - who identifies as female.
Poor lass had to stop after about a minute as prior to stopping g she was hit so hard her chin strap came off and the Algerian broke her nose.
She is absolutely distraught and horrible to watch

Absolutely outrageous and unfair. She has trained her whole life for this moment and been cheated against someone with a strength advantage. Makes the Olympics a complete farce.

They (the female boxers) might consider just giving the Algerian the medal; and then they, the others can progress normally to the final and win silver. As it is a mockery they should mock the mockery. And thoroughly discredit the antics of politics.

From what I can tell this story has lead to misinformation being spread rapidly around the internet claiming the Algerian athlete was born male and is a trans woman. The idea that Algeria (a country with virtually no LGBT rights) would send a trans woman to the Olympics is ridiculous.

The Algerian boxer was born as a woman with female sex parts. It's also worth saying she competed at the 2020 Olympics at failed to medal, which goes against the narrative that this boxer is some kind of powerhouse no woman can hope to beat.

The origin of this claim is that in 2023 she was disqualified from an IBA competition after failing a "gender test". What this actually means is that her testosterone levels were too high (possibly doping, testosterone is basically as effective as steroids in women's sport, although no doping charges were bought against her).

The IBA president also claimed that they detected "XY chromosomes" but the IOC has seen no evidence of this (and they don't formerly recognise the IBA due to strong allegations of corruption in the organisation). Even if it's true though the most likely explanation is that the boxer was unknowingly born intersex (the same thing that happened with Caster Semenya), not that the boxer was born male.

I almost believed they would pull off another miracle after that break but it wasn't to be. Despite the loss Murray can retire with his head held high after that run, respect to Dan Evans as well who has played out of his skin this week.

Absolutely. An inspirational sportsman though Evo played the better tonight. Couldn't stick the smug looks and smirking from the yanks.

France probably expected more than one gold in judo but it was worth the wait for them, Teddy Riner's throw to win the gold was class. He lit the torch in the opening ceremony and he's just shown why he got that honour.

With those long legs, could see from the start what he was setting up for, and it was always going to be the throw he was looking for. Easy to read but not easy to defend against. Great winning throw.

Can’t quite believe Beth didn’t win the BMX final. Didn’t quite nail her start then she got shut out over the first obstacle and stuck in traffic the rest of the way.
