Trust Statement - 8th December 2021

We love the club, you idiot!

At the last supporters' group Zoom meeting with Ron Martin, he told one of our board members that he loved the football club in a ranting response to a perfectly reasonable question. It is now apparent, following the article by Chris Phillips in the Southend Echo, that our club has been placed under a transfer embargo by the National League, and this presents further evidence that Ron Martin's love of this football club is simply not equal to that of the fans.

Subsequently, Matt Slater of The Athletic has reported that the balance to HMRC to clear the embargo is in excess of £200k. The club, through a statement released this lunchtime, have confirmed the embargo is in place. We are angry and upset that our beloved football club has been left in this embarassing position once again. We are not naive enough to fail to understand the current financial impact on the footballing world of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially with the lack of matchday income over recent weeks, but we have been here before and the club has seemingly not learnt any previous lessons. This is truly concerning.

We learnt in recent days that Charlie Sayers, a promising young defender who had already appeared for the first team in the National League at the age of just 17, had been sold to Tottenham Hotspur. This is not the first time that a youngster - albeit on this occasion one recruited relatively recently - has left the club at a reduced price in a bid, presumably, to raise money towards an outstanding tax bill. This is another sign of the ongoing poor management of the football club at the highest level. The club has continued with its recruitment of backroom staff, which it is now obvious it cannot afford; we believe the new recruits have been set up to fail and have simply presented further cost to the business without being allowed to deliver the success they are striving for.

Where is Ron Martin? For someone who claims to love the football club he has not been seen on matchdays since supporters protested against his ownership. Ron is clearly unwilling, or unable, to attend football matches at the current time. We do not believe he is a fit and proper owner of Southend United Football Club and he continues to run the club with a flagrant disregard for league rules, whether that be within the EFL or the National League. This is completely unacceptable and we will seek clarity from the National League regarding the current position and the possibility of further sanctions.

The Shrimpers Trust believe that we need a United fan base during this troubling period. We acknowledge that not every fan supports the Trust's wider objectives. We do all support Southend United, though, and we are seeking to engage with ALL viewpoints within our fan-base with ALL cards on the table regarding potential actions.

We shall continue to offer our full support to Kevin Maher, the backroom staff and the team on the pitch, however, we do not support the continued actions (or lack of actions) from the owner of the football club. Ron Martin is ultimately responsible for our continued demise, by seemingly not supporting the club he protests to love.

Yes it is.
Very surprised at this and SVC needs to understand the vitriol being spouted (myself included) is the result of YEARS of mismanagement and lies by someone who also claims to love the club and has rubbed our noses, reputation and trust in to the dirt.

I suspect that none of these comments are aimed at TL, SVC, KM, DC, MB and JS and I hope that he realises that.

but we have a right to discuss recruitment because its the clubs number 1 problem, actually god knows what our number 1 problem is, there's so many. If someone just decides to close a thread then that IMO, it goes against the whole point of the website. Anyway, thats that from me on this because we could go on forever. My only point was, I don't believe anyone has/should have the power to pick and choose what we do and don't talk about.

Just in addition to JC’s reply, we also get posters who start threads asking us to close them for their own, various reasons.

Truth be told, nobody is on a power trip, and if someone does close a thread they have to justify it to the other mods. There is always a valid reason why a thread gets closed, tbh.

Having spent time on both sides of the table, I can see why it can occasionally look like someone may be arbitrarily power tripping, but honestly, there is far more structure to it than that mate ??

If the SOS does not call in the planning application I think Ron would find some investors to tide the club over which they would then recoup when £ starts to come in from the development at FF and Roots Hall. Until that point I don't see Ron selling as he is so close to his pot of gold that the purchase price would be too high for any developer to stomach.

Brilliantly worded. Just the sort of strong statement we need right now. None of us want to do it. But it’s time for further action.

On the plus side, I suspect we now hold some kind of record. I suspect we're the only club to have been under embargoes in League 1, League 2 and the National League.
If that doesn't create a new record, it may do next season when we add National League South (or wherever we end up) to the list.

Bloody good statement!!! This is what I have wanted to see from the trust, time to bite back.

Haven’t been able to read everything yet

I wonder if we took on all the new staff as we genuinely thought we would be able to sign players. And something unexpected has happened to Ron’s cash flow.

Ie someone with experience on another thread suggested Ron would find access to cash more difficult because of the court case. Is it possible he had access to funds , but doesn’t now?

Is it possible that he wasn’t expecting the court case to proceed ( and didn’t have a plan B) and that is causing the issues.

I have no idea on the above, but surely something has happened. Surely he didn’t agree to the back room staff knowing it was a waste of time?
