Said to Samib on the way home from footy today that it wouldn't suprise me if they racked up 500+ to win the game... Here's hoping i'm wrong and we can wrap it up nice and early tomorrow!

I agree we should of put a few more runs on the board when we had the chance...have a nasty feeling about this now...Hope I am wrong.

Yesterday was an odd day, though. An hour after lunch, you would have to say that Strauss's decision to declare overnight was totally and utterly vindicated. At 128-5, we were all speculating on whether they'd make it to tea. The Australians were batting with all the tenacity of headless chickens - partly because they were aggrieved, and perhaps with some justification, at the decisions that had seen Katich out to a no-ball and Hughes out to a questionable catch from Strauss. Ponting's heave at Broad's delivery was the shot of a man playing in anger, not in control; and he must surely have been disappointed that the rest of his side were seemingly surrendering the game as cheaply as he had thrown away his wicket.

But then, for reasons I can't really explain, England went totally flat. It demonstrated how much we miss a player like Simon Jones, who could get the old ball to reverse. Instead, from about 65 overs onwards, it was painfully obvious we were going through the overs waiting for the new ball - my mate Tim called it "declaration bowling", that's how desperate it was. It was actually rather maddening, and more than a little disappointing. We completely surrendered the initiative, handed it to the Aussies, and then had no way of getting it back for the 15 overs until the new ball was due.

For instance, why bowl Collingwood? I can't see how his medium pace dobblers were going to do anything, especially when he kept drifting to leg (because he was bowling from the Pavillion end and didn't really know what to do with the slope). Why not give KP a go, or Bopara - both would have been more likely to do something than Colly's wobblers.

If I have any encouragement for this morning, it is that both Freddy and Jimmy beat the bat last night with the new ball when both Haddin & Clarke were extremely well set. Clarke & Haddin have to re-establish themselves this morning, and so we must have the opportunity to strike early. However, if we don't skittle one of them in the first 30 minutes, we could be in for a very long day with very few fingernails left by the end of it.

Frustrating.

Matt

Has Bopara bowled a ball yet this series? There's been at least 2 times we've been desperate for ideas and he hasn't been used.

Don't think so - probably because (a) Strauss may not know much about his bowling; (b) his confidence is probably a bit dented; and (c) as a result, he won't want to risk being carted around the ground, since that would simply add to the clamour for him to be dropped...

:thump:

Bit of a slower ball there from Swann (whereas the slighty quicker one worked yesterday) and as i post Freddy gets his 4th BOWLED Hauritz!!
