The American Gun Law

Turns out she was a prepper and the end of her world did come sooner rather than later, things like this will happen again and again because some people are just nuts more so in america.

Canada for example.

Canada has 10% of the population though so you would expect them to have 10% of the issues. Even so there is definitely a massive difference in psyche between the two.

Around 250,000,000 guns are in the hands of the american public,To put this figure into context it equates to every man woman and child in this country has 4 guns each !!

Even in America with a population of 311 million thats a high proportion and shows why they will never get on top of it.

Haven't read this thread but thought I may add that the gun laws that exist in the US actually prevented the killer getting a licensed firearm and the weapon he used was his mothers. Most Americans don't have guns and have no desire to have one and are as shocked and sickened as everyone else.

88.8 guns per 100 people. Who has all the guns then?

Indeed, but the question then is why does a school teacher need an automatic rifle, shotgun and two handguns?

Whats the point in not licensing a lunatic having one if his mother is licensed to have an arsenal.

Makes not sense at all.

I'm fortunate that the 'Mericans I meet when travelling are often very liberal and are (mostly) against gun ownership. They often speak however about their families who are armed to the teeth. "My brother just bought a semi-automatic" "My Dad has two shotguns and a pistol".

MK, I don't know where that is from but I'm sorry it's crap.

It's from the Huffington Post from August, which itself is American. Why is it crap? I've been to America, it freaked me out when I drove through (notably) liberal Seattle there were gun shops everywhere. I'd hate to think what some little town in Arkansas or Colorado is like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country

Did a bit of digging !
I am not a supporter of guns by the way, far from it but I do think people and countries tend to get stigmatised unfairly without logic or reason being used.
Note the numbers shown are not saying that 88 people out of a hundred own a gun as it explains that many gun owners will have more than one gun. Interestingly, the numbers for canada and New Zealand was also quite high but I can't recall a single like incident in either of those countries.

MK, I take back my last comment which wasn't meant to offend.

They only prevented him from getting them because he was 20. And there's no good in that for anyone if the culture of the country has led to his mother having five guns in the house.

It's the gun culture which needs to change and the first step towards that is banning the sale of these weapons.

It would be interesting to hear Rusty's take on all this being a semi-import in the USA . :)

The gun lobby are very powerful and with so many weapons in circulation legal and illegal, then it would be nearly impossible in my view to convince those with weapons to give them up. Of course this should happen it just wont.

Surely the first thing to look at is the safe storage of firearms? You can have all the controls in the world, but if some dopey legal owner's going to leave a weapon on the sideboard then it's hardly limiting their availability

I believe that even with a ban on the sale of weapons, the 250,000,000 such guns currently in private hands would be 'Grandfathered' and therefore would still be legal. But at least it would be something. And then maybe in 30 years time parents will be able to send their kids to school or to the cinema in America without worrying that some nutjob may decide to write his name into history at their expense that day.
