The American Gun Law

I think virtually every member of SZ, let alone 99.9% of the western world cannot understand America's love/hate obsession with guns, not to mention probably those Americans who live in the big cities like NY and LA. A very small percentage of Americans hold sway over US politics and the killings will keep happening. There doesn't seem a big enough number of dead children that will stop it.

I used to go pistol shooting and used to work at a clay pigeon shoot as a teenager.

I love guns and enjoyed using them responsibly however all of these places attracted the odd person that you suspected had a more than healthy relationship with guns.....

Ive said before I have an interest in guns and if I lived in the states would own one myself. When I was over there last wanted to get to a range but didnt get the time.

That said whilst I would own one I also see how crazy it is to have millions of them in the public domain.

I would own several guns with mother of pearl handles.

After we visited the Vegas gun range,an armed security guy asked us to stand with him until our taxi arrived for our own safety, opposite the range was a dodgy looking apartment complex. The security guy told us the complex had several people living there who would rob and potentially kill for their own greed, guy then walked across the car park which Mr security pointed out he was one not to cross but was also a gun bully.Convertible sports car pulled into the car park and the driver who was a rather tall woman packing a sidearm,Mr Security told us she was a bodyguard and was trained in self defence and was a crack shot with her gun.

We got into our taxi and simply thought "we are in the Wild West "

Which gun range is this? There's a lot in Vegas. I've been to the one off Tropicana Ave, called the Gun Store, several times. Has always been sound as a pound

'Murica

Guns aren't necessarily the problem, it's the ****tards who get hold of them. Personally I don't really care if 'Muricans have them or not, but I'd say if it wasn't a gun they were wielding, it'd no doubt be another weapon.

No doubt, but it's unlikely that someone with extreme mental health issues could slaughter 20 pre school kids in cold blood like Adam Lanza did at Sandy Hook.

Really? There's plenty of ways a lunatic could coldly execute random strangers, including school children. Home made explosives? Not that difficult to assemble & carry out. How about a car? Simply hurtle towards a crowded area and mow as many down as possible? Even a madman with a machete could run into a classroom, start swinging wildly & cause carnage.

I partially agree that guns are bad m'kay, especially in the wrong hands. But guns are an inanimate object. To ban them, would be like treating the symptoms, instead of actually tackling the virus.

There was a link I posted a page back that looked at the psychology behind mass killings/school massacres. The obsession with weapons and guns is a contributing factor, along with people becoming obsessed with mass killings (so there have been lots of Columbine 'copycat' attempts). The whole thing is complex and hard to sort.

The easy access to guns is clearly a contributing factor - is it acceptable that someone can get 13 handguns and thousands of rounds of ammo, legally? That seems a world away from the semi-understandable reason of having a single gun locked away for home protection.

If you want to go on a rampage a gun is the way to do it. Its much harder to create the same sort of damage using a vehicle or a knife/Machete. Yes you can go into a classroom with a machete but its far easier for you to be slowed down and for someone to intervene.

In Dunblane the killer shot 32 people in under 4 minutes, try doing that without a gun.

To try to stop the "virus", ie the virus being some sick people in the world is impossible. There are always going to be crazy people out there, and if they have access to guns there will always be someone who will pick up a gun and go shooting.

Wont ever change.

From Pubey's link...an interesting snippet...

But at the conference in Disneyland, virtually everyone I spoke with agreed that guns make these crimes a lot easier to commit—and a lot more lethal.

Yeah I agree, having such easy access to guns doesn't seem right. But saying that, it's not hard to pick one up illegally anyway. So even if you were refused in an actual shop, you'd still be able to get one, somewhere.

The only way to stop that, would be to round up & destroy every single gun in 'Murica. Even if every citizen complied, that'd be near on impossible, considering there's what, over 300 million apparently?

You can buy guns illegally in the UK, would any of us have any idea where to start?

The only guns I have ever seen are in farms.

As you say with millions of guns in circulation there even if they were banned getting rid of them would be impossible anyway.

Really? I would agree it's more chilling, when it's guns involved. Just the sight of a gun can make people freeze on the spot. But would it be any less damage, with a lunatic chucking a homemade pipe bomb into a room? Or several rooms?

I'm 100% certain I could obtain one, by the end of the day, if I so wished. Which I don't.

Making a pipe bomb takes more effort and know how than picking up your gun and pulling the trigger.

The fact there are more high school massacres with guns than pipe bombs shows exactly which is easier to carry out. Of course you ban guns and people could use pipe bombs, but the availability and opportunity is less.
